For a 2 litre engine with a 4.5 litre sump, you'd need two of these 250ml cans or one 400ml can. The recommended dosage is 250ml per litre of engine size. When people say 'it's not that good' that's most likely because they haven't used the correct amount for their size of engine.

does it stop engine knocks

Depends how you define " knock " . It certainly quietens tappet rattle . My sons' Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCi sounded like a bag of nails and now is considerably better after changing to Castrol Magnatec A1 + plus Ametech Restore . I am not a mechanic but if the knock has serious implications, e.g. bearing failure , all I can say is , it would minimise any damage on a temporary basis . Having used it for years I know it " prolongs active life ". Sorry I can't be more specific . Have an experienced local mechanic listen to it .
