DrinkSafe WaterStraw vs. Sawyer Mini
I own both the DrinkSafe WaterStraw (DWS) and the Sawyer Mini (SM) and thought it would be helpful to do a comparison review:There is a review here on Amazon that claims that the DWS does not filter soil and algae! I can confirm that this is completely erroneous and that the DWS filters water extremely well as can be seen below (see DrinkSafe website for further info. on its filtering capacities). The DWS (40g) and SM (53g) are both lightweight and are therefore easy to take on any trek. The DWS has a far superior filtering system to the Sawyer Mini. The DWS can filter VIRUSES and CHEMICALS as well as bacteria and protozoa whereas the SM does NOT filter viruses and chemicals. This is an extremely important consideration when using for lowland watercourses in the UK which can contain viruses and have agricultural run off.The DWS does have a design issue related to its superior filtering system. The DWS has to be submerged in water up to a marked line 6.5cm above the bottom of the straw. This means that you can't drink all the water in a container below 6.5cm. The SM on the other hand comes with a plastic straw meaning that you can drink the water right to the bottom of the container. The SM also has superior versatility. You can screw it onto many ordinary plastic bottles such as coke bottles. It also combines well with Evernew collapsible bottles. The DWS cannot be screwed onto other bottles. The SM can also be adapted as an inline filter for use with a water bladder. Both the DWS and the SM can be back flushed to prolong the life of the filter. However, the SM claims an extremely long filter life of 100,000 gallons of filtered water. The DWS claims a filter life of 700 litres. This is a significant win for the SM. Both filters will remain safe throughout their life as they will both continue filtering until they become too clogged up to use. Both DWS and SM advise using the cleanest water possible and allow sediment to settle etc. to prolong the life of the filter. In conclusion, while the SM clearly has greater versatility and a much longer filter life, the most important issue for me is having a filter that will filter out just about everything a British water course can throw at it. By this measure the DrinkSafe WaterStraw wins the overall comparison in my opinion as it can filter out viruses and chemicals which the Sawyer Mini cannot do. I will have more peace of mind using the DWS than the SM for this reason despite the SM's other advantages. It is worth noting that currently the DWS (£16.95) is also cheaper than the SM (£23.95)The DrinkSafe Travel Tap Pull Top (138g) is my favoured water filter overall because it combines the excellent filtering of DrinkSafe with versatility and ease of use. However, the DrinkSafe WaterStraw is great as a lightweight back up filter that you can carry around with you always. If DrinkSafe could overcome the 6.5cm threshold below which the water can't be drunk in a future design, as well as make it thinner so that it can fit through an ordinary bottle opening then it would receive five stars from me. Hope the comparison is helpful.

Getting your head round drinking dirty water is the worst thing
I got this product and went out a walk without water so I had no choice but to fill a cup from a lake and drink it. It's now 12 hrs since I tested this and I'm great the worst thing was getting my head round drinking from a lake. The fish were swimming the swans were swimming and the algae was starting to grow and spread on the water. I was shocked that when I sucked the straw fresh cool water came out.( don't know what I expected) but that's it from now on this sucker is coming every where I go hiking camping or fishing. No more carrying my water everywhere. If there where ten stars I'd give it ten.

Bit disappointing
Really hard work to get a long drink so don't rely on it for your only source of drinking water.Ok for emergencies as its really convenient to carry.
