Impressed
There seem to be a lot of key safes available, and after a bit of deliberation I decided to get this one for outside an elderly relatives house. The combination of a known brand and the features I wanted helped me to decide. The packaging isn't great - the kind of hard plastic where you need strong scissors to get into. It comes with screws which is helpful. It was easy to put on the wall with a drill and screwdriver. I like the tough angled outside which is a good deterrent for trying to force entry. The combination lock seems of good quality and the environmental guard is a good touch. Since putting it up it's needed to be used a few times, so has proven its worth. Letting people know the code has been enough for them to figure out what to do. The only negative part is that it's quite small inside, and the lock mechanism encroaches significantly on this. For a normal house key or two it's fine, but probably not good if you need many larger keys to open a door.

Yale Y500
Bought this for an elderly relative, and spent many hours researching before I decided on this one. I would probably have preferred a push button model, but I wasn't impressed by the security on these. It surprised me that each digit is simply set as either active or not active. This means that a) the code can't use the same digit twice (could be an important consideration...) and that the code digits can be entered in any order. There are probably still many possible combinations, but not as many as one might imagine. Having decided on the 4 digit wheel type lock I then researched these. Without wanting to give too much away, I googled the name of the key safe I'd decided on, only to find a serious flaw in its security. Doing a similar search for the Yale Y500 I could find no similar flaw. That could be because, if the lack of reviews on Amazon is any indication, it's a relatively new model. Looking closely, it perhaps doesn't have the same drawback as the other model, but then I'm no safe cracker. Still, fingers crossed... The biggest problem I found was getting it out of its packaging. I know Yale have a reputation for security, but that's taking it too far! Once out, the first thing I noticed was how big it is. Most of this is the black surround, which is heavy duty plastic. This is probably intended to make it difficult to lever it off the wall. It would certainly slow down anyone trying. It comes with 4 screws which would be fine for wood, but like most people probably I was fitting it to brick. Yale recommend using anchors. These will be far more secure than the screws with wall plugs (the latter not supplied). I found M6 the right size, but make sure you get them with a head for a screwdriver rather than the bolt type. There isn't room in the safe to turn any type of spanner. Setting the combination is easy, and the wheels can be concealed by a cover which is slid up. I was tempted to remove 1 star as the wheels and numbers are rather small for elderly eyes and fingers to see and turn. However, that would perhaps be unfair as they are no smaller than those on other key safes, and actually the prime need for key safe is for relatives, friends and carers, for whom it should prove no problem. When I tried I found there is plenty of room inside for at least one Yale and one mortice key. Finally, another plus point. To open the key safe, enter the code, and then press the circle above the combination. (looks like a button in the picture but is just indented on the lid). This causes the lid to spring open. To close the safe you have to push the safe closed and jumble the digits. If you don't do this, the lid will spring open again, making sure the safe can not be left unlocked. Hopefully I've made a good choice, but I hope too that it's never put to the test.

Looks good, sturdy and does the job - but please ...
Well - first off - the other reviewers were certainly not wrong when they commented on the packaging! Simply dreadful - I was determined than I was going to open it and NOT have to wait for my husband to get home from work, but it defeated me. My husband had to use wire cutters to get the thing open - really, is this necessary? When we finally got through the packaging, it was rather larger than I expected mainly due to the plastic edging but being ergonomically designed, deflects any blows should someone be so inclined. Compartment large enough to hold a yale and back door key. You have to remember to scramble the digits when closing otherwise it still shows the key code. I bought this after leaving my keys in the car and shutting the boot (which also had the house keys on). Looks good, sturdy and does the job - but please sort out that ridiculous packaging!

Secure!
Rarely review, but some of what I’ve read on others’ comments need addressing. This is very secure if fitted properly. The plastic surround (which makes it a bit wider than some units) is great as it will plainly snap if someone tries to lever this off the wall, making the main unit (which is a steel case within) even more secure. The code setting is a breeze, and the internal space will take at least two sets of keys. My sole complaint? Why supply this without the required (or indeed any) wall plugs?

Good product let down by some easily remedied things.
The key safe itself is very good, very sturdy and serves its purpose nicely. That’s the positives over. First challenge is to unpack it. It is packed in quite thick plastic which has a finger hole on the back which has some serrations connections attached to it. Don’t bother with that. It is really hard and the serrations are quite sharp once it’s open. Use some good scissors. The setting instructions are ok if you’re a puzzler otherwise it may take a while as it is a series of pictures on an a5 piece of paper. My real gripe though is the fitting kit. No wall plugs. Are they that expensive that they can’t be included. Then the screws. They are crap alloy screws which are quite soft. Obviously good quality steel screws aren’t suitable for something as important as a key safe. The heads lose shape really easily.

Needs to be Securely Mounted to Mitigate a Potential Security Issue
Provided it is securely mounted to a solid surface, the unit does the job. Controls can be a bit fiddly but not onerous. Room for up to six average size house keys on smallish key ring. A good feature is that the door cannot be closed without moving controls away from the opening combination. A security issue arises because the enclosure is not entirely metal. A section at the rear is covered by the outer plastic casing, which while very solid, could be penetrated and the keys removed if the unit was able to be easily removed from the mounting surface. So, ensure it is difficult to remove. Overall, a solid unit that is easy to reprogram the combination of which there are about 10,000.
