Portishead: Beth Gibbons (vocals); Adrian Utley (guitar, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Moog synthesizer, bass); Geoff Barrow (drums). Additional personnel includes: John Baggot (samples); Sean Atkins (background vocals). Like Soul II Soul a few years before them, Portishead spearheaded a revolution in both pop and dance music by introducing a distinctive new groove. Portishead was at the vanguard of the '90s trip-hop onslaught, and after a three-year respite, they return with a self-titled second album to reclaim the trip-hop crown. Beth Gibbons is on her way to becoming the Billie Holiday of electronica, retaining a stoic, laconic tone while recounting tales of despair and emotional upheaval. The lazy, spacious beats that are the band's trademark provide just the right combination of urgency and tranquility to underscore the emotional contradictions at the core of Portishead's music. Adrian Utley's delightfully creepy guitar and keyboard work adorns the proceedings tastefully and effectively. On tunes like "Cowboys" and "All Mine" Portishead makes it plain that when it comes to arresting, unsettling electronic dance-pop, nobody does it better. Review: Portishead is MADE for Vinyl. - This album is one of my top 10 of all time, so I allow myself to "double dip" and this is one of the few vinyl's that I actually own to listen to on a record player. It's one of the few records I can listen to completely from front to end, every song, without feeling cheated. Very well rounded, conceptually genius... P'head are incredibly talented (though I realize they are not for everyone) The sound quality on this is amazing, and truly does give you a different listening experience from listening on compact disc. Songs are spread out over four sides for optimum quality. The sleeves are kind of cheap (standard paper with a hole) and sometimes tricky to get back into the album sleeve which is no thrills side loading back and front cardboard sleeve. But, that's shouldn't be a deterrent. This album is amazing! Review: Really like portishead.. - I really like portishead, and I am a fan. This cd is kind of on the dark side but I would give it a "B" overall. Loving it!!

Portishead is AMAZING
One of a kind and so talented. A fantastic all-time band from the 90’s. Beth (vocals) has even does some incredible vocals in the classical (symphony) genre. Unique, amazing voice. Unique band. Highly recommend this.

Great album, quality vinyl, but cheap packaging.
I love this album and was happy to get it on vinyl. Note that in order to increase quality, they split the album into two vinyls, four sides. So for example side A has two songs. This means you'll be getting up to do the flip dance pretty often. My main complaint however is that they then squeezed these two albums into one regular, basic sleeve. Sleeves are normally pretty tight anyway so the album doesn't slip out, but forcing two in there makes it so tight they are hard to manage. Getting one back in after a listen involves a bit of extra strategy, patience, and time.

Five star album among all albums ever.
Get stoned without smoking anything by cranking up this hidden gem. I was transported to a different world while still being here.......if you know what I mean. Awesome production, music and vocals. Where did these cats come from? Play it at your party and the coolest people there will think you're a god for knowing about it. If you don't have parties have one with yourself on your trip to a stunning and amazing dimension the folks at Cern are still searching for.

Obsession Takes Over
I've been listening to both albums (Dummy and P-P) for a while. Comparatively, Dummy has commercial aspirations whereas P-P wants to drag you into some corner of the back room and wrap you in a straight-jacket. Claustrophobic, obsessive, introspective and haunting by turns, P-P on All Mine says it best: "...make no mistake, you shan't escape, tethered in time there's no where to hide from me." P-P takes an evolutionary step away from Dummy's playfulness (to the extent it exists) to a stripped-to-the-emotional-bones approach, all led by Beth Gibbons' etherial / wavering / processed vocals. "How can I forget you?" Apparently, I can't. Among the notable tracks is Elysium -- the one, ironically, most derivative of Dummy, but no less evil-mystery-movie than the rest of this CD...that suddenly changes course half way through into a plaintive, wordless piano ballad (implying you might be able to leave), only to be trapped once again..."You can't deny how I feel." After listening to P-P, there's no doubt any longer.

Great album, great packaging.
This was the first vinyl record I ordered on Amazon. I ordered it because I was already ordering Boards of Canada's 'Twoism' (which by the way is incredible and you should check it out) and I needed one more small purchase to get free shipping. This was a good choice. I have always kind of liked Portisheas but didn't listen to them a lot. Pretty good album. The packaging was great and no damage whatsoever. But I will probably try not to buy any more albums on Amazon because I'd rather support my local record store.

I won't bother going into details about each individual track. All you really need to know is that this is an ESSENTIAL purchase; whether you liked 'Dummy', whether you are into Electronic / downtempo music, or simply if you just appreciate well-made, beautiful music. I missed Portishead first time around, being too immersed in dancefloor-oriented stuff to truly get into this. Now that I'm older and wiser, I can fully appreciate Portishead for what they are - the best electronic band of the 90s if not EVER. This album feels a bit more 'grown-up' than Dummy. It's certainly darker and the production is of a higher standard. That said, I prefer the first album - it simply has better tunes from start to finish. A couple of the tracks on 'Portishead' feature a side of Beth which I really dislike (too much banshee-like wailing and warped impressions of Shirley Bassie for my liking) - a theme which unfortunately was built upon even further in 'Third'. A lot of the uplifting melancholy of Dummy has been replaced by a twisted angst, which although works well for the most part, shining though on 'All Mine' and 'Elysium', I feel means that the heights of 'Numb' and 'Strangers' are not quite matched. That said, this album is still head and shoulders above everything else in the genre and beyond - and having listened to 'Third' recently, I can also say, it doesn't get any better than this from Portishead themselves............
