Are the shelves modular? Or can they be removed or shifted up or down to make larger or smaller spaces between shelves?

You can leave a shelf off to make a larger space between but there are no "extra" holes to add it further up or down. You would just have a shelf to store in your closet for future use.

How tall is this bookshelf??

I measured mine and it's exactly 55 and 1/4 inches tall.

Do the shelves taper in size or are they all the same? In the photo, it looks like they are larger on the bottom than those at the top.

Unlike some other versions of vertical bookcases, the shelves on this one are all the same size. It's the photo angle that makes them look different.
