Carmilla
Carmilla is the first vampire tale in literature, and being Irish I can be proud that it was written by an Irishman. This is also, surprisingly, a lesbian story. For its day it must have been shocking. Carmilla is a young lady taken into the household of a European noble family. She won't explain her own family and has eccentric habits. Gradully the narrator, the daughter of the household, is drawn under her spell, with tragic consequences for the nearby village. Some points which interested me include that we meet the term cortege without the word funeral, the villagers and servants don't count as company, and Carmilla says she knows nothing of the peasants. This book is a novella length and more easily readable than you might expect, with beautiful passages describing the countryside and a mounting sense of dread. I strongly recommend the read, and I don't normally read horror.

A different and weird take on vampires. Going back to original law. Well worth a read if you up for the old English style.

A must read for vampire and gothic literature fans
I heard about this book at at exhibition for the gothic in London earlier this year, and scribbled it down as one to read. It's one of the earliest vampire novels, being written in 1872. I was most surprised by how sensual it was, and delighted by the fact that it's written from the perspective of a woman. There is this beautiful characterisation of the passionate friendships prepubescent girls often have, and how uncomfortable that can be when unrequited.
