No they are thick cotton...I am pleased with them...you could use them in the gym..

Q: Do you think these would be good for under dresses on holidays as a few of them are very floaty in the wind!

I bought these for wearing under dress.They are oerfect for that reason.

Q: Are these shorts suitable as underwear, or do they have a centre seam all the way round the body between the legs (irritating to delicate parts!) ?

No, I think these shorts are too coarse to be used as underwear.

Q: Are these high waisted? I don’t want a hipster style short.

I would say definitely not hipsters. Sitting midway on your waist. At the same time I would not describe them as high waisted. That doesn’t sound like it’s much help. But I don’t like low waisted shorts and mine were not low waisted.
