The blood pressure lowering effect of this cheese up to 12mmHg systolic and 8 mmHg diastolic has received a lot of good publicity over recent years. According to Dr Sarah Brewer this is because it contains probiotic strains of Lactobacillus Helveticas bacteria, and is most pronounced in Grana Padano after it has aged for nine to twelve months.Apparently, it acts in a similar way to prescription ACE inhibitors the side effects of this prescription medication that can be debilitating for some and only a BP drop of 6.8 mmHg systolic when used alone. Grana Padano has less salt than most cheeses and in studies does not cause any weight gain. It also contains calcium, magnesium, and potassium all of which are anti-hypertensive. It can be taken with prescription medication to improve their effect.The medicinal daily dose is 30g which contains 157mg of sodium compared to 227mg for Parmesan. This will last you a month and is a comparable price with blood pressure supplements. It can be used in a variety of dishes but I just eat and savour it on its own with a medicinal dose of nice red wine!
