Well-written, but...
Charlie is the most unpleasant Lenski character I've read, and more unpleasant than many other characters. If my children were still young readers I would not want them to read this book, because they might think it would be ok to act like Charlie. She's a spoiled brat and her parents are saps.

Lois is the BEST
You can't go wrong with Lois Lenski books. The characters have good morals, they are hard working, not-perfect, every day people. They tell about different regions, occupations or lifestyles in American in the 1920s-1960s. You don't have to worry about magic or creepy things in these books. They are good, wholesome books with a lot of character.

Tough young cowgirl
Ok, but not as enjoyable a read as her other stories

A Favorite
I've loved Lois Lenski's books since I was a child. I wanted to have these before they were no longer available. I read and reread this book over and over. Now the grandchildren are reading it. Her books are so descriptive that you feel as if you are really there.

Excellent book, as I would expect from Lois Lenski
Excellent book, as I would expect from Lois Lenski. Realistic. I feel as if I lived through that era.. If reading to children I would use Charlie boy's sometimes bad attitude as an example of how not to act.
