A real workhorse
I bought this article not for hiking, but for daily use. I am a mail carrier and this pack sits behind the seat in my mail vehicle and manages my drinks, my tools, extra pens, lights, miscellaneous weather gear (neck gaiter, cleats, and gloves in the winter, cooling kerchief in summer), and my smaller hats. It goes to and from work with me every day, five or six days a week. After most of a year, it's still holding its shape, zippers still secure, bottle holders still cinching tight. This is a "tardis" container for me, holding more in its space than it seems it should. I found the original price a bit high, but it was worth every penny for the long-lasting quality. I cannot speak to the comfort as worn for hikers, but I use the shoulder strap in and out every day and it hangs from the shoulder strap in my vehicle.

If you only want to buy one lumbar pack, pick this one.
Excellent build quality, well laid out features, very comfortable to wear. Holds a decent amount, too. It's not too heavy, but it'll take all the stuff you need for a day out hiking. The pull tabs on the zips are easy to use (even with gloves). Now, I will grant that it's not as cheap as some lumbar packs out there, but the quality and design, not to mention the warranty, make this an easy choice. It's well worth the price.

Perfect for large dudes
Pluses: Roomy, good quality, robust zippers, multiple compartments, nice choice of colors, roomy waist strap for larger users, shoulder strap, pockets to tuck in the waist strap if using it as a shoulder bag. Minuses: 1. if one has a small waist and larger hips, (a) there’s a lot of strapping that has to be cinched up and the extra length flops around distractingly and gets in the way of clipping the waist belt (b) the pack sits on the hips and flops around on the waist (because the pack is a cylindrical shape || not an inverted cone shape ^) 2. The shoulder strap tends to flip around so the padded side is up instead of on the shoulder. 3. Although the compartments are nice and roomy, that means most of the things one puts in sink to the bottom and are hard to get out (so extra small pockets would be good). 4. A little on the pricey side, but the quality is worth it. Improvements: additional small pockets for items such as cell phone, glasses, and wallet would be a nice addition. The pocket that the key clip is in is harder access than the back pocket, so putting the key clip in the easiest pocket to open would be good. One option would be to put the key clip in the zipper pocket on the waist band, or having a second waistband pocket on the side that’s just padded now.

And another quality product from Mountainsmith
This 13L pack is the perfect size. It is well made and functional. While a bit pricey, as a quality product and well withstand the rigs of Dailey use.

Best lumbar pack on the market......
I started using the Mountainsmith Lumbar packs back in the mid-90's when I needed a large pack to hold all of my personal gear and one that was comfortable to wear all day, every day. I've accumulated 5 (coyote brown, olive green, black, one that is made of hemp, and now the gray version). I've used them for recreation and for field work for a Federal agency and never had a problem. The newer version has a zippered pocket on the right side of the waist belt that is perfect for vehicle keys, keeping them both accessible and secure. Quality product and highly recommended by a daily user.....

Best Day Pack EVER!
This is the perfect day pack: plenty of room in the large areas of the pack, even for a water reservoir, if you prefer that over water bottles. I like keeping the heaviest things I carry (like water) closer to the center of my body, so I put lighter things (rain cover for the pack, xtra socks, rain jacket, sandals, etc.) in the secure water bottle holders on the outside of the pack. Anyway, there's generous room in the main compartment for extra clothes, first aid kit, and a meal, plus things like binoculars, journals, etc. Plenty of secure/zippered areas for must-not-lose-on-the-trail items (car keys, wallet, etc.) The drop down outer flap is great for a mid-weight jacket, or rain jacket, that needs to be readily available depending on the effort/heat I'm putting into the hike. The belt: come on! this is the best day pack belt on the market. Wide and lots of smooth hip padding and two additional external compartments for smaller items (though the zippered pocket does hold my iPhone 15, so it's not small!) on the belt at the front of the body. And the very best part: I have to wear NOTHING on my mid and upper back, where I generate a big percentage of heat while hiking. Also, my upper body can move without being encumbered by a pack--sometimes required on rock hops and in forests. When I travel by air to places I'll be hiking, the pack is my under-seat bag. My other good-hip-belted day packs with the same capacity could not fit under the seat. Very high quality craftsmanship mean my first one only finally wore out after 25 years of hundreds of miles of travel/hiking. (It's still in good enough shape to be my dog's travel bag.) I almost forgot: the bottom straps can hold a bottle of wine, a tarp, a pad for sitting, additional light shoes, towel, bathing suit, or many of the trail-specific things you like to take depending on your destination (baguette, anyone?)

Large and comfortable
I needed a pack to hold camera gear, water. Etc., things needed for a day hike. This seems well made with a thick material. It is comfortable on my waist but also has a good shoulder strap. It will actually hold my camera with 600m lens which surprised me. This makes it easy to get everything to the car. I have used it for a couple of short birding hikes and found I don’t notice it is there until I need something and it is easily at hand. All the various pockets make it easy to reach what you need. This is lightweight and gives me more than enough room for day hikes.

Great bag but laptop sleeve is snug
This replaces the same bag I’ve had for 20 years, and hopefully it lasts another 20. It’s great, though the laptop sleeve is a just a little bit narrower than I would like as the laptop won’t fit horizontally.
