This is Lio's fifth album, originally released in 1988, now remastered and reissued with four bonus tracks by Ze Records. The incredible success of Pop Model and its four amazing singles repositioned Lio as one of the most important French pop singers of her time. Intense promotion, multiple entreaties, heavy radio airplay, magazine covers, countless numbers of TV appearances without mentioning the three videos constantly broadcasted on musical networks, certainly kept Lio and her producer Michel Esteban busy. Nevertheless, Pop Model needed a worthy successor. With the aid of Jacques Duvall, Guillaume Israel (who wrote two wonderful tracks: "C'est €a Ma Vie" and "Malaise Sur La Falaise"), Vincent Palmer and Yann Leker, Can Can set out to remold Lio in image and song. At the beginning, the concept behind this album was to be a tribute to the typically French state of mind symbolized by the famous can-can style. Born in the late 19th century at the notorious Moulin Rouge Parisian cabaret, the can-can is an exclusively feminine ritualized and provocative dance. This revolutionary, original, cheerful and politically- incorrect state of mind seemed to be the perfect lineage and the natural evolution of Lio's image initiated with Pop Model. Obviously, Can Can featured potential hits as much as Pop Model, however, the switch from energetic singles to the softer ballades of Can Can (like the single "Seules Les Filles Pleurent") was clearly misunderstood by the audience. Featuring anthemic rock, bubbling synth pop, burlesque-tinged siren songs and morose ballads, Can Can did not sell as well as her previously-released albums. However, Lio clearly remained a compelling personality caught in a marvellous and imaginative visual context, confirmed here by the album artwork done by legendary artist Hugo Pratt.

Broadway Musical, Movie Soundtrack
First of all the CD arrived in good condition. It is from the Twenty Century Fox Motion Picture Can Can starring Frank Sinatra, Shirley MacLaine, etc. This is one of the broadway musicals that I have liked for years, and owned on vinyl, and tape as well. I recommend it for you, if you like similar musicals.

Good recording but why are the songs so jumbled?
Capitol Records released the original Broadway cast recording of CAN-CAN (Can-Can (1953 Original Broadway Cast) but they also issued the movie soundtrack, mainly because Frank Sinatra was one of their artists. The movie retains only 8 of the show' 15 songs, augmenting the program with other Porter songs ("You Do Something to me", "Let's Do It" and "Just One of Those Things.") Sinatra is in excellent voice here and his slowed down and heartfelt rendition of "It's All Right With Me" is the definitive version of the song. He just doesn't sound terribly French, especially when his crass American accent crosses with Chevalier's authentic item. MacLaine sounds even less at home as the dance hall hostess, but Louis Jordan adds a touch of class and the orchestrations by Nelson Riddle are top drawer. When Capitol released the LP, whoever compiled the tracks had them ridiculously out of order. Not only that, if you put them in the proper order the program flows beautifully from one track to the next.1. Main Title/I Love Paris/Montmart (#7)2. Maidens Typical of France (#9)3. C'est Manifique (#8)4. Live and Let Live (#4)5. You Do Something to Me (#5)6. Let's Do It (#6)7. Entr'acte (#1)8. It's All Right with Me (#2)9. Come Along with Me (#3)10. Just One of Those Things (#10)11. I Love Paris (#11)12. Can-Can (#12)The Sinatra/Chevalier track of "I Love Paris" did not make the final release of the film.Perhaps Capitol (or DRG) will re-release this one with the songs in the correct order.

ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK, PLUS NELSON RIDDLE'S ARRANGEMENTS
This presents the eleven numbers from the film, sung by Frank Sinatra, Maurice Chevalier, Louis Jordan, and Shirley MacLaine. This was not one of Cole Porter's best scores, and the quality of the vocalists is variable. My preference is for the second half of the compilation, which presents Nelson Riddle's separate instrumental arrangements of the score.
