The Test of My Life: From Cricket to Cancer and Back

The author Yuvraj Singh is one of the most sought after cricketing star amongst the Indian youth. He is one player on whom the entire country relies upon when it comes to winning shots and saving the game from critical situations in International Cricket.When his career was at its peak, this young player was one day diagnosed with a rare type of cancer called ‘Seminoma” consisting of a tumor in between his lungs and heart. That was the day from which he fought with this fatal disease and came out victorious after a year to be back again on the cricket field, playing for his country.This book, which he wrote, surely brings out tears, particularly at the time when going through his tough times of chemotherapy at Indianapolis in USA. The side-effects and the pain caused while the battle between the medicine and the cancerous outgrowth is taking place inside the patient’s body, is quite excruciating. He could successfully bring in all his emotions with respect to how he was able to cope with the deadly pain….all because of his strong will and determination to go back to India and play his game, as before.The best part of his life is that he set up a charity organization for cancer patients, named “YOUWECAN” to help detect cancer in people living in places where there are no proper hospitals and medical facilities. Very few celebrities go to that extent of helping the poor in fighting out the deadly disease, which, he could conquer and survive.Pros: The author’s narration about his disease and the way he neglected it is a strong lesson to many who neglect their illness and avoid seeing a doctor, when something is really wrong with their bodies. His extremely strong will power to survive and play cricket again is the trait that every cancer affected patient should adopt in order to win over this deadly disease. The author’s concern for those who cannot afford the kind of facilities and financial power that he was bestowed upon is quite commendable. Finally, his encouraging words about the sanctity in social acceptance of cancer patients is to be well received and thanked.I would definitely recommend this book to all those patients who are undergoing the painful Chemotherapy, to get that additional confidence to live on….Cons: Having lost my brother to Seminoma twelve years ago, I still feel that cure for this disease is only for the rich and famous. Cancer deaths are just not the death of a person but a death of the entire family dependant on him. Many die because they cannot afford the kind of treatment Yuvraj could get. Many do not have access to basic pain killers even. Wonder when the real affordable generic medicine for all kinds of cancer would roll out to save lakhs of cancer-affected lives of the poorer world. There was no mention of his famous girl friend and where she was during his bad days.The book is definitely not for those countries which do not play cricket. The actual interesting part of the book, as per me, is only from the middle, when the author actually starts describing his treatment and the aftermath. Prior to that, it was little boring!My favorite quote in the book:“Play the tournament for someone you love or respect or for someone who is special and has played a huge role in your life, Play it for someone you think you owe something to.”My rating is 4 out of 5

I am a cancer patient and I can feel the pain that Yuvi writes about in this book. Love his pace and style and most of all the Gaudi font !

Yuvraj is a very successful cricket player with a huge popularity among Indians specially after winning the World Cup.This book successfully portrays the struggle for survival during a cancer treatment and how he overcomes it and survives against all odds and is now back playing cricket at international level professionally.How his parents wrote his destiny and made his character.

The author relates the story of his life and how he dealt with cancer. It is very well written and traces the story of his life, how he let go of some of his own dreams to fulfill those of his father, and how he faced the extreme scare of a potentially fatal disease and overcame the challenge with the help of caring professionals. Highly recommended.

truly inspiring story of the man who had hit 6 sixes in an over. Not only did he return after successfully fighting with the life threatening disease but overcame and is back in the game.. a salute to him and must read for all cancer patients and their families. he truly shows that if you think, you can do it!!

Fabulous, inspirational... I laughed and cried my way through this book twice in a row... Recommended for cricket lovers and anyone who has faced troubled times and health issues. This will pull you through. Gotta love Yuvraj ❤️

Absolutely inspirational

I simply loved the book.I used to think of myself as a big fan of yuvraj singh but this book corrected my misconception.This book will tell you his venture into cricket and many incidents which made the star he is today.The book has touched on his personal side, i.e. his family, his parent's divorce, and best of the lot his struggle with cancer.Cricket is just a medium, the main thing he wanted to convey is how he always fell, and always stood up,and start running again.Kudos to yuvraj.P.S. to add to it i got it at a price of 200 which is very good in compared to the market shops.

Everything about this book is good in that Yuvraj Singh doesn't like to mince words about his personal battles and a lot of things are revealed to the author. At first, he was tentative about revealing the news to the media. Later, after someone broke the news about his very personal illness, he began to be comfortable with it. He has depicted scathing pain during chemotherapy and how he began to be emotional about his life or things after surviving the disease.The whole story in this book is about grit, determination and a steely resolve. He could manage to break free from the condition owing solely to his athletic abilities. Without these his heart could have burst as the diagnosis was done very late. This tale of a hard fought athlete encourages everyone to be physically fit. Otherwise, life could become very treacherous if afflicted with such a monstrous illness. A support factor like his mother is also very essential as she never left his side.Life is about dogged perseverance and brutal aggression. Live on, Yuvraj!!

Very much impressive. A really good inspirational book. In this book, for the first time, Yuvraj Singh tells the real story behind the 2011 World Cup when on-the-field triumph hid his increasingly puzzling health problems and worring illness.It is about the human will to fight adversity and triumph despite all odds.And lastly I must mention, the pages are also fine. Printing good as well.
