Fit perfect in a 97 e36 M3
Was expecting a lot of modifications based on other reviews but the only change I needed to make was sanding down the bushing to match the same width as the stock bushing. C clip fit with no modification to the base of the shifter.

Requires dremelling to fit snap ring.
Not worth the time to properly fit this into your car.

Good if you are prepared to modify it significantly
So I'm using this in a 2006 E46 M3... and as the title says, if you have a dremel and are ok with needing to modify it before it can be used, then it will work nicely. If you're looking for Plug-and-Play, stay away, look elsewhere for sure. I had to grind 2-3mm off of it to get it to sit in the carrier far enough to affix the c-clip that hold it in place. It was then a tiny bit loose side to side in the carrier so I drilled and tapped two holes in the carrier and used small machine screws to stabilize the shifter in place. After all of that it's completely solid and a great short shifter for my needs. Given that a "good" aftermarket is 10x the price at least, it was very worth it for me to make the modifications. For $20, if you have the ability to modify it, go for it! My guess is that this likely fits the older style or non-M3 shifter carrier better. I've included some pics of my carrier, other carriers may not require as much modification.
