It is just a one off payment and synology do provide regular updates to software. 1 licence is required for each camera on each NAS you use. You can transfer the licences to a new NAS if you decommission the old one but if you plan to use second NAS on the same network or at different location you will need a second licence for each camera. The system is expensive but works well.

Can you add multiple 1 licenses to a synology nas. i need 2 additional licenses and don’t want to buy a 4 device license.

Yes, you can install more. 1 license adds 1 extra camera. So for 2 extra cameras you will need 2 extra licences.

Hi, I have an extra 8 pack licence and it's a one time deal, it can also be transferred from NAS to NAS, I had outgrown my DS214 Play with 2 x 6tb WD Red's running 10 x Foscam HD camera's + my Movie/MP3 collection so brought a DS216 Play and moved the licence over to that one for the camera's only. I will say though that while it's NOT cheap the Surveillance Station software is simply awesome if you have decent quality camera's !
