Stitches (Junji Ito)

Good read, great artwork.
It's not your typical graphic novel read. It's more of a short story compilation with some really good artwork throughout. There is also a bonus manga at the end! I haven't finished reading it yet but overall I'm very happy.

Not As Bad As Some Are Saying
So far, I've read just over half of these short stories. The writing isn't poor. If anything, the stories are short enough that you want more. That may be a legit complaint but also means the writing isn't bad. And Ito's accompanying art definitely helps. The short manga story isn't bad but had an abrupt ending in my opinion. If anyone is looking for Junji Ito in novel form, you may be disappointed. But that's not what this is. But for a quick decent read or something to check out in your travels, Stitches isn't a bad option.

Another Great Junji Ito Book
This book might not leave you in Stitches, but the character is. As always it's a great writing and drawing. I have yet to steer wrong with any of his books.

The stories are.... Anticlimactic?
I bought this knowing it was a colab because I love Junjis art, even when he's not the one writing the stories. I'm going to give this 3 stars because the art is amazing (as junji always is) and for the most part the writing is, at the very least, decent. The only issue I have with this collaboration is that all the stories are overwhelmingly anticlimactic. I understand that they ARE short stories with only a few pages but the endings just feel so lacking in substance, which is furthered by the fact that each character isn't given anything but a letter for a name, which makes it hard to get into the story.

A novel with pictures not a Manga
I was hesitant to order this because of how little pages it has, however unlike ALL other of Ito's books on here this one is a novel with pictures, exactly like the older Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark books from the 90's with the really scary artwork.I like this and hope to see more horror novels with Ito's illustrations. And don't worry die hard manga fans Ito is dropping a 300+ page manga in July of this year called Alley.

If you buy it, buy it at a discount.
Listen. I love Junji Ito. I have all his manga, and I will continue to collect his stuff. That being said....I don't understand what hell everyone here is talking about it being worth the price. This book is priced at the same price alot of his 300 page manga are. And it is NOT worth that. It's only about 80 pages, and it's full of short stories written by someone else with Junji Ito's illustrations mixed in. Plus one bonus manga. Every story just abruptly stops when it's about to get good, and are barely 3-5 pages each. I feel like this idea could only work if 1, each short story was turned into a manga version. Or 2, had a continuous story line like a short novel with his illustrations in it. Because most of these short stories are boooring the way they are. What grabs you into a Junji Ito story is his twisted imagery. So he can get away with having short stories with no/bad ending. But it does not work like this. I am happy I bought this at a severe discount. Because if it wasn't for that i wouldn't have bought it to begin with. I only really bought it to have in my collection I guess. But yea if you REALLY need to complete your Junji Ito collection then buy this at a discount. But if you can only find it at full price skip it. Even the bonus manga at the end was kind of a nothing burger. Right when something was about to happen it just ends. He has so many good stories. Go buy one of those instead.

Don't expect a manga, but well worth the price
Stitches is the perfect name for this book. Short stories with a stich a horror weaved into the fabric of the larger storyIt reminds me of the "scary stories to tell in the dark" series, being mostly narrative with an accompanied illustration of horror. Although not as engaging or horrifying as a standalone Junji Ito manga, this is worth a read for those interested as a horror writer. These vignettes are a powerhouse of horrific moments. Imagine a somewhat normal moment, now inject it with a hiccup of the supernatural....this is what stitches brings to the table. You may not be able to suspend belief throughout the narrative, but the tales are entertaining and have stitches of horror woven throughout the fabric of its storytelling. Well worth the price, and well worth the read.
