Works great!
I bought the low speed 1x30 sanding combo for sharpening knives. I have only used it on one streak knife so far, but it was impressive. I put a 400 grit paper on it as well as a leather strop wheel on the grinder side. It cut paper like the U-tube videos after about a minute no problem. My father was a tool and die maker and he told me when I was growing up to not let the metal get too hot, and this unit does that without any problems.

Excellent Low-Speed Grinder for Metal Sharpening with Easy Belt Changes
I purchased this grinder specifically for low-speed metal grinding and sharpening, and it has been a clear upgrade from my previous belt sander that was designed for woodworking and ran at 3450 RPM. The slower speed gives me much better control and significantly reduces heat buildup when sharpening metal. One feature I really appreciate is the belt tension relief handle. Belt changes are quick and effortless compared to my old setup, which makes switching grits far less frustrating. Another important improvement is the electrical quality. My previous unit would occasionally give me a mild shock, likely due to poor motor winding insulation. I have not experienced anything like that with this grinder, which gives me much more confidence and peace of mind while using it. Best of all, this package includes a hefty built angle guide for knife sharpening which is paramount for a sharp blade. I always modify these guides (with a rotary tool cut-off wheel and metal burr bits) so that knives with larger bevels can easily be sharpened. (Images Attached if you would like to copy the modification) Please note that the modification I make is a personal preference only and the package will work well for you on most knives without making any modifications. Overall, this has been a solid, well-designed machine for metal work and sharpening, and it performs exactly as I hoped. I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to sharpen knives with a 1x30 belt grinder.

Prospective Buyers Need to know
This assembly was purchased solely to sharpen our many home knives quickly. I'm pretty good with a sharpening stone, but don't care for that volume of work anymore. My issue: I did not realize that the belt only goes down, which is a bit awkward for me. I would also like a consistent angle that doesn't require a lot of practice to attain. Therefore if you need belt direction to go away from the leading edge, this machine is probably not for you. It can't be reversed. Maybe it can be leaned on it's back? If you are comfortable with the belt grinding into the leading edge, it will work, especially if you're able to hand set the blade angle accurately and consistently. If you're not comfortable with that, I suggest watching this video on YT: "How to get more precision sharpening from you 1x30". There the author demonstrates how to sharpen into the belt using an inexpensive angle setting tool. He also shows how to correct/modify the angle tool so it functions better, allowing the knife bolster to get close to the belt. I'm still setting that up and will modify this review once that's finished and I have some experience with it. I have some concerns about sharpening small pocket knives with this machine, but I won't try it until I've finished the setup above. Ignoring the direction issue, the tool seems robust and well made. It was very easy to assemble and has worked well. I will soon replace the 6" 80 grit grinding wheel with a homemade MDF honing wheel to speed up honing and routine sharpening.

Mush better than I expected.
Finally set this up after a few weeks and was pleasantly surprised. The build was decent and overall looked like they put some thought into it. I wanted a slower belt sander than my previous on that died , I use it for sharpening so the slower belt speed doesn't heat up the steel as fast. Nice touches are the belt cover is easy to open and the tensioner is very convenient making changing belts quick and easy. I haven't used it much yet but don't see any reason why it isn't up to the task. While it's not a top of the line sander for major production it certainly fills the gap for lower use or specialized uses in a shop or for the layman. Now I'm interested in other products from Bucktool.

The fact this sander operates at 1750 rpm as opposed to 34-3500 rpm is a real benefit for several applications. I really like the belt tensioning system as well as ease with which belts can be changed. I bought this unit for knife sharpening.

Excellent addition to my knife sharpening business. It makes sharpening much faster once you get the hang of it. Use an angle guide attachment for better results.
