Q: I want this to drain a small garden pond. Can I wire it to the mains (12v transformer required?) and if so, how?

I wouldnt as 240V AC to 12V Transformers on experience give out 12V but maybe wont run the pump i once had a 240V to 12V transformer and tried to run some 12V Halogen Lamps and couldnt get them to work. The pump is a really good one and pumps out quick, i empty my bilge every other day (long story why) but i just use an old cheap car/leisure battery and have not charged it since last August 2018. Midland Chandlers Daventry Tel (01778 891401) would be able to provide you with the relevant information regarding 240V AC to 12V DC Transformers as they are a boat accessories dealer but if you just want to pump your pond out every now and then a car battery is perfect and it doesnt even have to be a fully charged one, just an old one you have knocking around will do with maybe a little switch for a couple of quid. I used a bilge 'thru connector' from the pump to progressively smaller diameter hoses and adaptors to get to the size of outlet I needed. I don't think there are any that go from 29mm to, say, 15mm which is standard garden hose. Best bet to at a ship's chandlers outlet. There is information on the internet regarding the internal and external diameters of commonly available hoses. That is how I found which outer diameters would fit the inside diameters of others.

I used a standard 29mm ID 'bilge hose' which came with a through hull connector off of Ebay. They come in standard lengths so specify what you need in length. Cheapest to buy the kits. if you have a problem sourcing one then try a ship's chandlers as most of them will have them but they will be more expensive than from an online auction site. Try searching for a '1 1/8" id hose kit' as boating products are usually specified in inches for the US market. Amazon are showing a few at present in the region of £20 for a 6ft kit.
