Tried & True Java Stain & Finish, Quart

This worked so much better than I expected! I used the cheapest wood from Lowes called “white wood” and used the Java finish on it. I’ve heard that other stains bring up the grain so you need to sand after applying but that was not the case here. It left the wood with a nice feel, unless you put too much on then you’ll have to keep wiping off the excess. You really don’t need to apply much. Photo of the scrap wood shows one coat above the white line and two coats below the white line so not much difference with multiple coats.

This is 200% better than another wood stain I had been using to stain a coffee table (bare wood). The VOC of the prior product was so toxic in smell, and lasted for days, that I could no longer use it. I even had to buy a respirator because that stuff was so bad. Now, on the other hand this product has a very low VOC, very light, almost none existent. My only issue now is finding, if the manufacturer makes it, a quart can instead of these pint cans. So, manufacturer if you make the quart cans of this product, please let me/us know. Oh yes, regarding the staining of bare wood. How well the first coat of stain takes hold depends on the type of wood, but right now I have no complaints. After some additional use I will have a better idea on how to rate this product on its staining capability.

I was commissioned to build an adult sized bed with walls that needed to be non toxic for a special needs family. This was my first time using this stain and I couldn’t be happier with the result. The best part was, NO SMELL!!

I really liked that there was very little smell to the product, so no toxic headaches. It’s also easy to wash off if you make a mistake or get some on your hands. The stain is quite thick as well. I painted a door with it and I still have 2/3rds of the can left, so it goes a long way. However, the color online was much redder than in reality. I purchased Java for it’s slightly reddish undertone (as seen in the picture), but it came out with a strong yellowish undertone when I applied it. That was disappointing as I was trying to match to other wood in my place. I would be mindful of the colors when choosing.

On Amazon "Java stain" has a definite orange hue. Upon delivery the color on the can looks like pecan. When you open the can of this outrageously priced stain the actual color is a dark, ugly, dirty motor oil looking, blackish brown, not a hint of orange. Don't buy from this company. No way to tell what color you will get.
