Will this stream netflix?

I dont have Netflix so I'm not a hundred percent sure, however it works fine for me when using vudu, Amazon and Disney plus so I don't see reason why it wouldn't work for Netflix

My son hooked his samsung s8 plus to our tv and it works great for video with no lag but we can’t get sound. any ideas?

Unfortunately, I do not. I use the cable from my laptop to an HD monitor. Not familiar with Samsung, but perhaps there may be an audio function in settings or try searching Google.

Will this work for a 2013 macbook air with the thunderbolt port?

No. It's for USB-C, not for Thunderbolt

Can it be used with iphone xr as well as the new se iphone? i will be getting a ipad next month also.

It would only work if the port on the phone and the iPad were usb-Cs.
