So I ripped the exhaust system out of my X5 to see what happened. First off I removed the resonator and it was okay but didn't change much. I was hungry for more. So I went ahead, after very little deliberation, and chopped off the mufflers. Now that made a difference. That is what you call a straight pipe and it sounded ridiculous. The two sides of the V sending differing frequencies down the individual straight pipes and creating this mishmash of obnoxious, unharmonious garbage out the back end of my Bimmer. So, to remedy the imbalanced sound, I sellotaped an X pipe into the middle of the exhaust to blend the engine growls and aid with back-pressure. This helped unify the sound coming out the end but it still sounded like trash so I blu-tacked on some Cherry Bomb end cans which definitely helped with the overall tone and improved the engine performance by giving back some of the lost back pressure, but the noise was still utterly ridiculous. At any speed the windows of nearby towns would tremor, but it was at about 2000 revs where the real damage was done. I saw the wool fall straight off a sheep. I saw a flock of swans sink in a local pond. I saw the spire of an old church topple as the vickors hat blew backwards off his head. The drone was biblical and it had to be stopped. At the low price that they were, however, I thought I may as well give it a shot. They arrived super quickly and in no time I had them installed. Let me tell you ladies and gentlemen, that is EXACTLY the sound I was looking for. Everything came together in that moment and as the birds began to sing again, I heard the miracle of a newborn entering the ULEZ zone, a waterfall started falling from a nearby rock formation and the church bells began to ring once again. All was back to normal. All was well. And my X5 sounds excellent.
