The remote has never worked for me

No You must manually start it. It will automatically cut off after about 20 minutes or you can manually cut it off. I really liked this toy because my cats loved it. It was their favorite until they got too old. For safety’s sake, I never turned it on unless I was going to be there to observe.

Q: Does the cover tangle? I've purchased others in the past and have to keep untangling it because the material is so flimsily..

Once in awhile it will get hung up but not tangled. I would leave it on for 20-30 min.s at a time and my cat would get it loose himself. The material is fairly stiff and my cat has enjoyed many hours with it.
