No pilot drill, so use a template for accurate placement. Check the drill's size before you cut!
Drilled through slate mounted on cement backer board with thinset mortar quickly and easily. It's a great diamond hole saw and I would expect it to last for many cuts. I only needed it for one hole ( a shower valve retrofit) but at that price it was a no-brainer. I would recommend using a template for guidance. I cut a 5" hole in a piece of 1/8th inch plywood using a traditional hole saw, and used it to guide the Drilax. You can also use the circular cutout plug in the same manner. This is actually easier in a way, as you can screw it directly to the material. The screw and its hole will be removed with the cutout. One warning: check the diameter before you use it!! The first one I got was a 5 1/8th inch saw packed in a 5 inch box! It was because it didn't fit my 5" template that I was saved from disaster. I ordered a second one from Amazon and it was sized correctly, and I returned the first.

Good bit
This bit worked really well. I cut 4 holes in porcelain tiles that were in the corner of 4 tiles. I used a piece of Schluter Kerdi board as a template. It made nice, clean cuts. FYI, this is a good/perfect size for the Hansgrohe ibox.

Cut through 5/16” ceramic tile with ease. Keeping cutting area wet is critical for successful cut
Worked well on ceramic tile

Far exceeded my expectations
I expected this to be a consumer-grade diamond hole saw, but I found it more properly belongs in the pro-sumer category. Admittedly, if you need to cut 5" diameter holes all day long, this saw probably isn't up to the task, but if you're a DIY'er remodeling a bathroom or two, this is just what you need when tiling and you get to the toilet flange. Or maybe you want to make trivets and cup coasters from tiles leftover from your last project. This tool will do both. Depth of cut is just under 1"; there are slots and holes in the frame to pry out the core once the cut is complete. The photos show my saw after cutting a half-dozen holes in very hard porcelain tile (wetting the tile while cutting). The diamond matrix looks unscathed, and the last cut was as easy as the first. There are a few light rust spots on the inside because I stupidly forgot to remove the tile core after the last cut and it sat wet for a day or two. Cutting is most easily done in a drill press at about 450 rpm, misting water occasionally around the rim. You can also cut freehand (though it's hard to get a perfect circle): tip the saw and gently engage it at one point on the edge, then slowly bring the saw perpendicular to the surface and continue. Please remember to wear hearing and eye protection.I wish the seller included some recommendations on material cutting speeds, diamond dressing schedules, care, and the like. This tool can give years of service if properly cared for; I bemoan the fact that manufacturers and sellers increasingly prefer to ignore such considerations.

May take some tim but worth it!
Great product, be patient. Took me a few hours a day but the results were amazing. I was installing a vessel sink and it required a 5 inch hole. I tried using another hole saw and a jigsaw but nothing touched the final top which i think is granite or quartz. I used the other whole saw for ceramic and wood first and came up through the bottom since it was easy to guide. I think i would do the reverse next time so the sink pipe had more support to center. I ended up adding this..

Works great!
I needed this to make a hole for the shower rough in valve in the middle of a porcelain tile and it works well. I wish it came with a jig to keep it stable. I used an 1 inch foam board to help create the jig but plastic is better and longer lasting.

worked well with a guide and water
worked very well to cut a hole in porcelain tile for a shower valve. As someone here suggested, I first cut a same-size hole in a 1" piece of wood, clamped it over the tile, filed the wood guide with water and then made the slow cut. Worked really well.
