Parsing Guide to the Greek NT Paperback – June 3, 1994

This is an excellent tool to speed up your study process with NT Greek.

I have used Rienecker /Rogers "Linguistic Key to the New Testament" for years to help with parsing some Greek verbs for years. However, there were two failures of that volume: 1) it had curious lapses in some difficult passages, particularly where more than one translation was possible; and 2) it tended to give only traditional translations of individual words. I bought the "Parsing Guide" by Han to fill in these gaps and allow a quick verb reference so that I could research Gingrich-Bauer or the TDNT for more in-depth research and more accurate translations. Han provides the very helpful resource of parsing not only tense,mood and participle, but also providing person,number, and declension for each verse of the New Testament. It also provides the verb stem. As one reviewer has already indicated, the book also provides readers with a choice on those tricky passive/middle verbs which can greatly alter the meaning of a text (e..g, Mt 25:40) Although it might also be helpful to include verb meanings as Rienecker/Rogers does (as well as Sakae Kubo's stark format in his "Lexicon"), I find it much better to take the basic verb and research on my own rather than to be lured into a particular meaning. Granted , this book might become a "crutch" as others have pointed out, but I have personally found that for the practical preacher some crutch work is helpful at first or in a pinch, but decreases over time as one gains familiarity. I would recommend this book (even with some errors) as a decent adjunct to Gingrich-Bauer, Blass-Debrunner, and even, Rienecker/Rogers in translating the Greek New Testament.

If your looking for an inexpensive book that parses every verb in the Greek New Testament, then this is the reference for you. Right now I'm a seminary student, and I found this book helpful for a number of reasons. First, it parses every verb using easily understandable abbreviations (e.g. aor. act. inf. for aorist active infinitive). Second, it follows the biblical text by chapter and verse, so if there is a verb there, then it will appear in the order of the verbs in this book. Third, this book also gives the lexical form for every verb, which is helpful for looking the verb up, and for studying for tests, because most teachers require not only the correct parsing, but also the lexical form.I know that this book appears obsolete because of all the new computer software, but using this tool and some other "old school" book resources in translating and analyzing the Greek New Testament has really helped me earn high marks in Greek; and I feel as though others might miss out if all they are doing is pointing and clicking on verbs on the computer instead of taking time and working through a text.Finally, this book does contain some errors that keep users on their toes, but only about 5% of the time. I would recommend using this as a quick reference to check your work, but also be engaged in the parsing and reference other books to make sure. Overall, this is a helpful book for what it is, and I bought it for only a little more than a dollar plus shipping.

Previous reviewers have commented on the fact that there are numerous errors in this volume, and I have discovered this to be true; this is rather unfortunate in a volume that is designed to help, primarily, the beginning Greek student. The volume is useful to a degree because it follows the GNT verse-by-verse, but the errors keep it from being a foolproof aid to study. This may be just as well, since the other problem that is likely to arise is that the beginner will continue to rely on the book as a crutch rather than mastering the parsing of verbs.If you want a better (i.e. more reliable) parsing guide, then try either William Mounce's "Analytical Lexicon to the Greek New Testament" (Mounce gives a stern warning about who should and shouldn't use this lexicon in his introduction; in other words, he doesn't want Greek students to rely on his volume rather than learning the verb forms for themselves either) or "The New Linguistic and Exegetical Key to the Greek New Testament" by Cleon Rogers, Jr. and Cleon Rogers III (this volume, as the title indicates, goes well beyond the parsing of verbs and also follows the GNT verse-by-verse).As far as Han's volume goes, you will know that you are on your way to mastering the parsing of verbs once you are able to catch the errors in his book. Of course, that's not the best or most appealing way to learn. If the errors ever are corrected, then this volume will be an indispensible aid to reading and studying the GNT.

I bought this product because I wanted to understand the Greek New Testament. I also bought the Analytical Lexicon of New Testament Greek. Both of these books compliment one another. If you are wanting to delve deeper into the Greek New Testament, then "A Parsing Guide to the Greek New Testament" is a must. Thank-you.

Great tool but found a few verb tense discrepancies when compared to other textbooks I have.

A replacement for a very worn out copy.

If you are taking Biblical New Testament Greek you need to get this book. If you are thinking about taking Greek you need to get this book. If you know some one who is taking New Testament Greek get this book for them, they will love you for it.

Excellent! This is a very useful book especially for those of us who are familiar with Greek Grammar. For those who do not understand Greek Grammar, it's importance is lost and along with it an accurate understanding of what the Greek New Testament resulting in bad interpretation of the Gospel.
