is it good for sketchbooks?

I have used it for writing and adult coloring books...I think it would be suitable for sketchbooks. I also use it just for a stable place to put things on my lap...TV dinners, etc. It is very useful to me. I hope this helps you.

Is there lip at the front edge so the computer doesn't slip off into my the lap?

No lip. This item is pretty small for a lap top. It’s a little bigger the. My iPad I bought it for. It put a strip of non slip tape so my iPad would not slip off. I don’t recommend this item.
