If you are chosen by the bizarre black sphere known as the Gantz, you are already dead - yet you might be able to reclaim your mortality. First, the Gantz demands that you undertake brutal missions of madness, killing aliens hidden among the population. It is your only chance and you have no choice. You must play this disturbing game. And if you die again – and you likely will – it's permanent. Bonus Content: Disc 4 As Gantz opens, alienated high-school student Kei Kurono and his childhood friend Masuru Kato are killed rescuing a wino who's fallen on the subway tracks. They wake up in a room dominated by Gantz, a mysterious black sphere that sends them and other newly dead people on missions to kill weird aliens hiding on Earth. Among the recently departed is buxom redhead Kei Kishimoto, and Kurono's visible reactions to her overendowed figure constitute one of the running gags in the series. But Kei falls for Kato, who can't bring himself to shoot even the most grotesque alien--although he has no qualms about beating a menacing upperclassman to a pulp. After each assignment, Gantz awards the surviving participants points: if anyone makes it through enough battles and takes out enough aliens to acquire 100 points, they're set free. The inane plot is little more than an excuse to show all the blood, gore, and nudity the filmmakers can pack into each 22-minute episode. Although Kurono goes berserk fighting aliens, he can't save his friends from being crushed, shot, eviscerated, and cut in half. The story shifts illogically, violating rules that were established a few episodes earlier, before stumbling to a conclusion that has nothing to do with most of the previous action. Gantz feels like a throwback to the early '80s, despite director Ichiroh Itano's heavy-handed efforts to jazz things up with split-screen effects, reverse colors, badly integrated CG, and odd camera angles. Gantz was heavily edited when it was broadcast in Japan in 2004, but these uncut episodes seem less like the focus of the battle over censorship Itano describes in his interview than a cheesy exercise in gratuitous violence. A live-action feature adaptation of Gantz debuted in Japan in January 2010. Review: Great anime but definitely not for the faint-hearted - I bought this because I saw the movie Gantz: O on Netflix and I loved it so much I watched three times. I'm only a couple of episodes in and already it has a lot of action. It's has a great story line, especially if you watched or have watched the movie [Gantz: O] (which has amazing quality btw) because it gives you kind of a better understanding of what it's about. I know it's unorthodox to watch them out of order, the main character in the movie is in the anime, but there isn't any big spoilers so it's safe and I suggest it. The only thing that's kind of funny about the anime is how they run lol and Kato cries a LOT. he's sensitive. not a bad thing. but yes it's a great series so far. watch it.

The complete series I watched in 2005-2006
I absolutely love this anime. Some think it's over the top, but I love the story, characters, and well, everything really! Gantz is a rollercoaster ride of emotions! It's dark and perverted, but so much fun! Lots of cussing, violence, sexual content, and mature concepts like suicide, so it's definitely not for young kids. My teen loved it though. I just wish they would have finished the series! I had to buy the manga to find out what happened! You get 4 disks and all 26 episodes! Can't beat the price! It was so nice to watch this again after all these years! (My original copies were stolen).

If You've Read the Manga: 4 Stars for Discs 1-3, No Stars for Disc 4
(Ahoy. mateys! Thar be spoilers ahead! No so bad if you've read the manga, tho'!) As a huge fan of the manga, I have to admit that the first 21 episodes are, with minor exceptions, very faithful to the manga. The last 5 episodes, not so much, in fact they completely deviate from the manga entirely. For the most part, the stories concerning the Green Onion Alien, the Tanaka Alien (called the Suzuki Alien, here) and the Buddha Statue Aliens are pretty much verbatim from the manga. The biggest notable omission is that the series does not introduce Tae, Kei's girlfriend whom he originally dated on a dare. However, while watching, there were several little story sequences that I didn't recognize from the manga and they were all incongruous with the series in general. Most of them center around a little bookshop, it's owner, a few patrons and a book called "Labyrinth" (if you've read the manga, you're probably already saying to yourself: "Huh?"). These sequences also introduce Sakuraoka two full stories before she appears in the manga and Kishimoto sees her while shopping in the book store, as well. Sakuraoka is a patron in the book store and recognizes that another female patron has a stalker and the two have a conversation about a book they are mutually interested in called "Labyrinth". This book and it's central theme that "No labyrinth is inescapable" becomes the underpinning of the story in the last 5 episodes. The bookstore owner and Kei's teacher (who is male in the manga, but the generic anime female bespectacled 'teacher' here) are having an affair and they even end up being saved by the Gantz team when they happen to meet on the steps of the temple where the team are fighting the Buddhas. Also, during the Buddha section, they add in sequences about two serial murderers who are going around with baseball bats and killing homeless men. There is a painful sequence with the two murderers killing a hobo (the same one Kei and Kato save in the subway tunnel, no less) between the legs of one of the giant statues and everyone on the Gantz team and the aliens literally stand around during it. To me, this made it even more obvious that the sequence was shoehorned into the series and didn't belong. Especially after Kato finds one of the murdered homeless men and goes into a really awful diatribe about how murder is wrong. Also during this tantrum, Kato mentions that the Gantz team are actually opposed by Gantz and that they have to survive all of 'his' attacks. Nowhere in the manga is this theme ever raised at all because the 'aliens' are shown to be separate from Gantz. But all of that was just set-up for the final 5 episodes as all of these interconnected players (plus a guy who drowns saving a stranger's kid) end up in the room. In the manga, Kei returns from the Buddha battle alone and is sent on a mission by himself in the next story arc, but here, the room is now full of these newly introduced characters. The bookstore owner, Kei's teacher, the two murderers, the stalked lady (who resembles Reika from later in the manga) and the drowned guy have all been taken to the room. After the obligatory discussion on what's going on, Gantz informs them that the target for this mission is Kei Kourono himself (echoing a storyline in the manga where Gantz has the team target Kei's girlfriend, Tae). These last 5 episodes are abysmal. They have people running around in Gantz suits with Gantz weapons, but this is not Gantz. These episodes also start introducing dream-like sequences where Kei starts losing grip on what's real, as if Gantz was some kind of virtual reality. The writers also decide that the X-Guns have no delay for some reason that's never given. So they just fire like any old laser pistol now, bo-ring. Also, Gantz even throws out the mission parameters and time limit and tells the group to just kill each other. What follows is a turgid storyline involving Kei trying to keep the others from killing him by identifying the pair of hobo murderers as the real enemy. Loyalties switch back and forth, there is quite a lot of talking and the bookstore owner keeps bringing up the theme from the 'Labyrinth' book surmising that this must just be a game from which they can find their way out. Not once do they even mention the fact that the characters could get points that would free them, but like I said, this is no longer Gantz. In the last 2 episodes, the whole thing runs off the rails and has the two murders against everyone else. Somehow the murderers find a cache of good ol' machine guns and kill off several team members with them (in the suits? really?). The younger of the two murderers, Hajime, completely loses control and goes on a power-mad kill spree before having a really poorly written verbal showdown with Kei. The series ends with Kei losing his grip on reality and during flashes of what he's been through up til now, ends up on the tracks of the subway in which he was killed, just to have the train lights fade to white as the episode ends cryptically. I'm not sure who approved this story change, or why it ended the way it did, but whoever wrote it showed a fundamental misunderstanding of the series pretty much from the ground up. Get this set for the first 3 discs, because they're really great, but avoid disc 4 like the plague.

Awesome show
Came early, well packaged, the show is almost constant action and mysteriously addictive, prepare to be shocked by the secrets that normal eyes cannot see. When something suddenly breaks, or a door slams, or a building collapses, it could be natural erosion, or it could be one of those taken by Gantz fighting for their lives. Seriously, I've watched a lot of shows, anime, HBO, etc, but this is one of the ones that stuck, not only is it great animation and a deep frightening story, but also you kind of love the characters. Don't get too comfortable with them though, when Gantz owns you, you're life expectancy drops through the floor.

Perfect
Gantz is one of my favorite animes ever created, the action, drama, and getting it on fun was awesome kept me interested the whole time not expecting what would happen yet. I wish they would make like a second add on saying what would happen to them after all of the trials and points and what happened to everyone...I know they all died but you could deffinently add more to it and throw in some amazing twists if truly desired, but even after all of that its still going to stay in my anime library because it was strait up badass.

Life and Death. It's Nothing but a Game.
As Kei Kurono felt the train crushing his body he knew he was going to die. When he opens his eyes he is in a mysterious room filled with strangers and a giant black ball. Gantz. Soon Gantz forces them to participate in brutal missions where they have to hunt and kill deadly aliens...they're reward... a second chance at life. Gantz is one of those series with a fair cult following that has a certain battle royale-esque theme feel to it. This boxset contains the complete collection of Gantz which comrises of 26 episodes that cover 4 story arcs or missions. These episodes are filled with some great action scenes and a fair bit of blood and gore. In the UK Gantz has got an 18 certificate and deservedly so as the seris constantly pushes the limits o n how much it can put in one episode. However, it is not just this that gives Gantz it's 18 rating. From the get go, the series deals with many negative aspects of society as well as portraying several obsene and depraved areas of the human nature. Gantz's ability to shock the audience comes wave after effortless wave as it mercilessly attacks at your emotions. If you have a human heart, you are bound to feel something when watching this. The many topics that Gantz explores may not be what everyone wants to hear but Gantz covers them anyway. The dark, realistic truths about society and the world are conveyed with such brilliance and truth with just a hint of satire that it makes this series stand above other anime series for going to places where other series daren't. Throughout the story, the protagonist Kei Kurono meets new people from all different kinds of social backgrounds and while Gantz initially seems like an anime intended for the shock value on its audience, it soon develops into a rich and interesting character driven story. Not all characters are particularly likeable and some you may even come to despise, but that further creates a sense of realism. Throughout the 26 episode there is action, comedy, tragedy and great characterisation...not to mention a boat load of ecchi nudity and fanservice. Though the series can come off as a somewhat shallow titilation a anime, this is really not the point as there is symbolic and artistic meaning behind it all. The only negative thing I can think of about this anime is it's somewhat vague and inconclusive ending. With a series like Gantz, the anime finished while the source manga was still being made, so in order to bring about a conclusion they had to create an original ending exclusive to the anime. This usually causes a stir among fans because it rarely seems to do the manga any justice. The ending to the Gantz anime is a bit of a headscratcher and leaves a lot to be assumed. So apart from the last few minutes of the series, Gantz is an amazing anime. The DVDs come in a nice sturdy artwork box, with each of the 7 discs kept in slimpack DVD cases. Each disc contains some nice special features whch range from cast and crew interviews to music videos. This set contains both the English and Japanese language. I found the Japanese language was good, but it had nothing on the English dub, which in my opinion is one of the best dubs I have ever heard (alongside other animes such as BECK and Excel Saga). Greg Ayres steals the show with his chilling voiceover of Hajime Muruto. Ayres has voiced characters such as Chrono in Chrono Crusade, Koyuki Tanaka in Beck and Negi Sprinfield in Negima. In most of his bigger roles he plays the typical good guy character, but his character in Gantz has to be one of the most horrible, despicable and evil villains portrayed in any recent anime and he voices him perfectly. The animation on show here is nothing short of amazing. Created by acclaimed studio Gonzo, Gantz is series you wont want to take you eyes off, even if limbs and bloodied corpses are flying all over the place. The music is also really good, with some effective techno tunes that go well with the style of the show. Gantz is an anime that begins well and is strong throughout. If you are looking for something shocking, thought provoking and above all else, just pure entertaining then this may be the one for you.

Popped my cherry
This was the first anime series I ever watched as an adult and it set the standard HIGH. I love mature themed content that tackle phycology. The super hero, ninja gun fights are always a welcomed addition, and the gore and nudity just seals the deal for me. A manga, anime, 2 live-action films, netflix animated film?, cosplay costumes? Come on, Gantz is LEGENDARY! ⚫️

"I'll kill you"!
Gantz has to be one of the most violent and controversial anime series that I have ever seen. This is definitely for the mature audience. Without giving too much away, Gantz follows the story of two high school students, aswell as many others, who are killed at the exact same time at different locations. Rather than going to the afterlife or whatever they are transported to a misterious apartment room in Tokyo, inside of which is Gantz: an unusual black orb. The orb than tells the people who died to kill a specific "alien". The characters are than displayed with a collection of unique weapons and equipment and are transported to the area where the alien is present. The series is 26 episodes long, aswell as bonus features that include interviews with the creators, artwork, trailers etc. The animation is not the best I have seen but is still great, especially the gore and environments, which incorporate CGI into them. If you liked other anime series like Elfen Lied and Ghost in the Shell that I am sure that you will enjoy this.
