How do you wire it to connect your fire sprinklers to the smoke alarms?

Hard wired into the 120 VAC to the smoke detector, Black - HOT, White - Neutral, Red - Interconnect.  Alarm output; Blue - Common, Yellow - N/C, Orange - N/O, Grey - 9VDC output.   http://www.kidde.com/Documents/1276en.pdf  The Kidde relay modules can be used to activate auxiliary warning devices such as external bells and sirens, hallway or stairway lighting. Each relays will only activate when it receives a signal from an interconnected alarm.

Will the relay still trigger in a power outage?

No, unless you have backup power to the alarms and the relay.

Can I use this to trigger the alarms from either normally open or closed switch? Like a pull station?

Accepted Answer

Yes, this device can be used in either direction, as detailed in the manual.  If you use an external relay (like a pull station) to short the grey wire (9v signal) with the red wire (interconnect bus), it will cause the rest of the stations to alarm.

Does it matter to use normally open or normally closed? i have a apc power battery backup that powers multiple servers. if smoke alarm then no or nc?

It's my understanding that normally open and normally closed are both supported by apc power backup and Kidde SM120X. My advice is to use normally closed because this is a better fail-safe configuration. If you use normally closed and the connection is broken the apc will shut down. If you use normally open and the connection is broken the apc will remain running and you may never be aware that the connection was broken. I don't know which side should provides the voltage for a normally closed contact, but the SM120X has a DC output voltage for this purpose.
