HSK Standard Course 5A - Textbook

A fresh HSK 5 book, no damage or scratches. Will definitely be browsing the sellers stock for future purchases. If you're out of London and cannot get to the Chinese bookstore I recommend this seller for sure.

I find this book incredibly frustrating, not only does it give you more than 35 characters to learn per chapter, but then it introduces a whole bunch of new vocaubulary in the text that are not present in any of the other HSK levels. The lack of pinyin to accompany the text does not help either.

This book doesn't seem popular on amazon however it's the number one standard HSK book used here in China. It's written by well respected authors in BLCU and the official HSK prep book. Herein lies the problem. In all these style Chinese books you will see the typical exceptionally dull stories of Chinese life, littered with subtle propaganda of how great China and admirable Chinese society is and so on (story 1: about a Radio competition to find the most devoted and loving couple, cringy!) . It's not a great book for learning Chinese, but its useful for the exam. Chinese written material really do not know how to teach to western people. Very little will resemble daily life nor actual spoken Chinese here on the streets in China. Not particular to this book but has this annoying habit of including a LOT of words and idioms that don't appear in the vocabulary section, many sections not explained. A lot of words I use every day, several times a day will not appear in HSK lists. When my Chinese friends here the CD's they groan at the language and stories used.Note most chinese books are designed to be used in a classroom not for self study hence when there are Teachers PPT availableSo why the 4 stars? Its suitable for the exam, will help somewhat in self study but not a general comprehensive Chinese book.

Although there are going to be changes to the HSK level in the near future, this text and audio is an excellent step up from HSK4 materials. Aside from the new words, there is no pinyin, so the Mandarin immersion is greater than HSK4.I haven’t yet gone far into the book, but can see how much more accomplished I’ll be by the end.

He usado muchos libros para aprender Chino. Este es de los mejores pero definitivamente necesita dirección de un maestro nativo. Es difícil conseguir el Work book que le corresponde aquí en México pero se puede solicitar directamente a la editorial en China.

Provided you are a) a motivated person who has worked your way through the HSK 4 level and b) you have the patience to learn a special language as Chinese with a bit of intellectual approach (you must like to learn), then this book will bring your great satisfaction. Little by little you will notice that, if you happen to see Chinese texts at stations, airports or wherever advertisements for Chinese travelers appear, you can understand a lot. After finishing this 上 part, I have now started the 下 part and I am equally enjoying it. WARNING: This is not a book for time wasters who only do not know how to fill week-ends, this is a book for hard workers :-)
