Battleships Yamato and Musashi (Anatomy of The Ship)

The reference book on the Yamato class
This is a fantastic update on the previous version using new information obtained by the author. We will never know if it's correct or not, but having researched certain aspects I believe it's probably correct. If building any model of the Yamato this is a vital reference, particularly for larger scales. Well worth the money. It's a shame it doesn't cover the Shinano, but that is not really surprising as very little is known so fully understand why the author left it out.

The Imperial Japanese Navy's lost giants revealed
Amazing book. I've been intrigued by these ships since I was give a little book on Japanese battleships as a child. In those days there was very little known of the ships as the Imperial Japanese Navy did a "TSR2" and destroyed all plans and photographs of them the moment they realised all was lost. Over the years more has become known and plans and pictures have been found, and the wrecks of both ships have been found and visited with submersibles, and all this info has been distilled into this amazing book. If I could give it 6 stars I would. Bargain price at the moment too!

Not just a reprint
This book is not just a reprint of the Conway book I also own. It really is a new book. If you are a modeller you will need this book. The stern area drawings are immensely improved, especially the boat and aircraft arrangements. Did someone unearth a lost 'as fitted' drawing? The 3D drawings add to this work as well as the new coloured photographs. If you have this book and the Lengerer & Ahlberg book on these ships I believe you will have everything known on these ships in the English language.

ASTOUNDING
Awesome! Line drawings and exemplary colour (mostly grey) artwork of the ships (and sections of) from many angles with comparisons of how they changed through their relatively short careers. Truly an anatomical study, with every significant aspect and section detailed. Perfect for the new Tamiya kit.The brief text (the first 40 pages) provides a reasonable history of the ships and blow-by-blow timelines of their sinkings. The photos at the end show how little remains. These ships may have been imperfect but still what a lot of torpedoes needed to sink them! 39 on Yamato, plus 19 bomb hits, the vessels only ripped apart by internal explosions.

Excellent detail
The book has an initial text but it's mostly a comprehensive set of detailed drawings of the ship, complemented with colored 3D images from Stefan Draminski; the only reason I do not rate this mammoth 5 stars is because although featured in several drawing and pictures, there is no rigging diagram for the ship - the main reason why I acquired this book.

A stunning book
This book covered all the questions I had about the layout and weaponry of yamato and musashi. The illustrations are very well done and clearl6 visible. They only gripe I have is some illustrations disappear into the book binding. But other than that it’s a good book five starts

Fundierte Fachliteratur
Unbedingt empfehlenswert.

An incredible update to what was already the best source on the Yamato
If you have seen Anatomy of the Ship books, you kind of know what to to expect. The book is primarily plans and drawings. If you want lots of historical narrative or photographs, this is not the book for you (Get Warship Warship Pictorial No. 25 - IJN Yamato Class Battleships ). However, this book is quite a bit different from the rest of the series and the original version of the book. As for differences with the original, to begin with, it is much larger. There are color renderings and there is some color in the diagrams. There is no jacket and no jacket plan as the norm in AOTS book. The updated version includes coverage of the Musashi as well. The original version had very little in the way of internal details, especially when compared with other AOTS books. The update has a lot more of them. There are a lot more other details as well. The most comparable book is Capital Ships of the Imperial Japanese Navy 1868-1945: The Yamato Class and Subsequent Planning: Chapters 1-3 . There is material in this other book that I do not see in the AOTS book. However, The Yamato Class goes deep into a few topics and leaves most of the ship without cover.AOTS is the the best, first book on the Yamato from an engineering perspective.
