“Suspenseful, riveting . . . Achieves a universality that is movingly personal.” — The New York Times The explosively provocative, award-winning drama set in a country that has just emerged from a totalitarian dictatorship Gerardo Escobar has just been chosen to head the commission that will investigate the crimes of the old regime when his car breaks down and he is picked up by the humane doctor Roberto Miranda. But in the voice of this good Samaritan, Gerardo's wife, Paulina Salas, thinks she recognizes another man—the one who raped and tortured her as she lay blindfolded in a military detention center years before. Relentlessly paced and filled with lethal surprises, Death and the Maiden is an inquest into the darker side of humanity—one in which everyone is implicated and justice itself comes to seem like a fragile, perhaps ambiguous invention. A book on the complex nature of justice and reconciliation. I loved the way the author portrays the intricate relationship between victim, victimizer and judge. A modern state parable of how harmony and peace bring into a country by burying the contentious issues of torture and atrocities against the opposite groups.

Great read
I had to get this book for an online World Literature course on African, South American and Asian country- based authors. Definitely a must-read, and I suggest reading this before seeing any other adaptation like the Sigourney Weaver performance or Glenn Close performance.

It's very interesting.
This post-modern literature is interesting and I would read it even if it wasn't for a class.

Very gripping
I thought it was a powerful read. This is a play about a victim who thinks she has met her torturer. The trauma, drama and storytelling was so intense that I couldn't put it down.

English
I bought this for my English class. Didn't really understand it very well at first, but as a few different assignments where devoted to it, I grasped it bit by bit. Quite thought provoking to say the least.

Brilliant.
This was only 99p, and the only thing it had possibly "wrong" with it, were the fact that it had a preice written in the corner in pencil, and the pages were slightly yellowed. It's basically brand new, and perfect for school.
