Typical, great, but so basic
Big Normcore and MH-3WBomber fan here, have loved most of their products for the 54mm machines. Unfortunately, I don't thin this one is worth the price. It's really neat, looks shiny, and feels of high quality; For example, the base is very heavy for a WDT holder, with a nice rubber base to keep it from falling over. This thing will probably never fall over accidentally on it's own, at least not without some force/help. The WDT tool itself is quite nice, it has a magnetic cover where the needles attach, so technically yes it can be magnetized to the machines, but then why pay this price and not use the heavy base? I believe the magnetic cover is meant to keep the needles in, which it does a decent job at. Needles are very easy to install and remove, simply pop them in and out of the holes (Shh). This is also where I'm not amazed by the product, it's simply another needle in a hole design which now on days you can 3D print for free, or get a magnetic one for like $5-10 that will do the same job.If you want to support the brand like I do, get it, if you want it because of it's "quality" please look elsewhere, since I don't think a WDT tool is ever worth this price, unless it comes with some shiny bells & whistles. I already bent 2 of the needles just inserting them because the spring/back of the needles don't actually go all the way in, something I found out the hard way.

No more channeling!
I was already using a normcore tool to even out and tamp, but with msg portafilter could see spitting. A james Hoffman video showed how with a clear filter there are spaces around the bottom of the basket that stay empty.I watched a video of how to do it, and no more channeling! I've never used a different brand, but normcore tools are very good and this is no exception.

WDT 5/5
WDT 5/5 needles are small and work well, little fragile but they include replacements and magnetic sticker stand to hold tool when not in use

WOW! Puck prep with this helps pull great shots!
I have a Breville Barista Touch and used the included portafilter. Dialed in my shots over time with good quality coffee and filtered water. Decided to get a bottomless portafilter and this Normcore WDT. After about 8 shots I was able to dial in and get way better shots. My grind is set at 13, time for grinding is 20 seconds for 20g of coffee. Pull a shot for 31 seconds and I get 38.5-39.2g out. Nice shot, golden crema with no channeling (granted I use a Normcore WDT and Normcore spring loaded tamper). Shots taste better than before even using the same beans. Also used IMS basket and bottomless portafilter which allows me to see how the shot is pulling and its very useful. I never would imagine how important puck prep is, but it is. I would buy again.

Buen WDT

Well thought out and made, good value
I own 2 other similar WDT tools and the Normcore is easily the best: better thought out and made while being similarly priced.Nice attention to detail in its design from the flat top handle for easy storage, the magnet inside the handle for more storage options, and the base unscrews for easy needle replacement or pattern customization from the default 3x3 arrangement. Mechanical tolerances seem tight as the tool never came unscrewed on its own and the needles fit inside the housing tightly without any wiggle or wobble. The needle length gives me about 5 mm of clearance with 18 grams of grounds in the portafilter basket and there are no poorly cut tips on them. It's nice that Normcore includes several replacement needles and 2 metal stickers so you could store the tool under cabinets. The 0.3 mm needle thickness is thinner than with my other tools but I find they cut through more effectively in my medium roast coffees though YMMV. Extraction consistency is probably better though it's hard to say for certain as espresso is already finnicky to begin with, definitely no worse than my other WDT tools in this regard. There's still a tendency for the grounds to get pushed vs. cut through so I might try removing some of the needles to see if that helps. The needles are thin and will bend more under aggressive use (they do spring back though) so time and care should be taken to avoid permanently warping the needles. While the metal handle isn't awkward or uncomfortable to hold, either a rubber grip or hexagonal/octagonal shape with edges would improve the grip.I've been pretty happy with this tool for the month that I've owned it. If you're considering your first WDT tool or even an upgrade, I definitely recommend the Normcore.
