overheated after a week with only 9 led GU10 5w connected. Do not buy
After approximately one week of operation, the unit began emitting a faint odour consistent with overheated or degrading plastic. Upon removing the device and opening the switch housing, I discovered a burned component—likely a varistor or transistor—along with heat‑damaged wiring. One circuit was connected to nine 5 W GU10 LED lamps, and the second was connected to two 5 W GU10 LED lamps; both circuits exhibited similar failure symptoms. Given the relatively low total load, it is highly improbable that the connected LED lamps were responsible for the failure. The evidence strongly suggests that the switch itself was defective. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend this product. Initially, the switch appeared to be a well‑designed solution. However, after reviewing additional customer feedback on Amazon for Evolve dimmers, I noted multiple reports of premature failure. Several reviewers included photographs showing identical issues with internal components, reinforcing the likelihood of a systemic manufacturing or design flaw. One positive feature is the device’s ability to switch between leading‑edge and trailing‑edge dimming modes. The procedure involves powering on the switch, adjusting it to the maximum brightness setting (fully clockwise), and pressing the on/off button ten times. The connected lamps will then flash once to indicate trailing‑edge mode or twice to indicate leading‑edge mode. While this configuration method is conceptually convenient, GU10 LED lamps typically require trailing‑edge operation for optimal performance and compatibility. From a build‑quality perspective, the unit was disappointing. The faceplate arrived with visible surface scratches, and the manufacturing quality of the plate itself was substandard, exhibiting small metallic imperfections embedded in the finish. The BG Electrical faceplate measures 8.5 cm × 8.5 cm, whereas standard UK faceplates are typically 9 cm × 9 cm. This discrepancy may affect compatibility with existing backboxes or surrounding fittings.
