Q: Why does the ad have the number 2 in brackets? Is it 1 chair or 2

There are two chairs included. Just a warning if you are thinking about purchasing these chairs from this supplier, first I had to prove that i only received only two chairs when i ordered four (two plus two) , their dispatchers had made a mistake. second, one of the chairs was damaged on delivery, but they said i had damaged it after delivery and would not supply a replacement. Amazon sorted it out for me after i filed a claim. Good chairs but lots of sellers on Amazon.

Q: What is the measurement from the floor to the topmof the padded seat and how thick is the seat .

I do not have an answer to that. I actually threw the chair away today. The back support fell apart. I was disappointed that it did not last at all.

Q: This chair looks very like the made in china meco (which i find uncomfortable). is this the same chair under a different brand name?

Yes it is Meco, labelled as such. Also Costco have sold them a little cheaper. I personally don't find them uncomfortable, for occasional use. Fold up nicely for storage purposes. Wouldn't recommend them for constant use but perfect for occasional use.
