Boring to the point of tedium
Probably the most boring film I've seen this year, if not in the last twelve months.Inspiration for the film comes from the real life case of a 34-year old teacher (Mary Kay Letourneau) who seduces 12 year old male student, Vili Fualaau. Hard to believe, huh? But yes, it really did happen, and after she had served several years in prison, giving birth to their child, they married and had more children. Anyway, that's where this story comes from, however...Natalie Portman's character is that of an actress who goes to visit this couple with a view to "understanding" Gracie, and her 24 year marriage to Joe. That basically is it.There is no hint of what Gracie and Joe do for a living, yet they live a somewhat priviledged lifestyle in a large, beautifully furnished house, drive large cars and generally do little else. Oh - she bakes cakes and he raises butterflies. She is a very brittle, highly-strung person, he is, understandably extremely immature even at the ripe old age of 37. There kids are going off to college and he's beginning to wonder what his life is all about. Hovering in the background are Gracie's ex-husband, annd several children and grandchildren from that relationship.Wooden acting, dull characters, scenes which don't add much to the story - there is no plot by the way - and heavy, thumping piano music all make for a boring film which I had hoped would develop into something but never does.

Superb
Don't listen to these other guys. The film is great. Incredible performances, dark and multilayered story and a lot of potent meta commentary.
