another super that is a must for writers of the period
This is another of the brilliantly conceived and carried out, detailed works of the Medieval Period but out by the Museum of London. Dress Accessories; The Medieval Household : Daily Living c.1150-c.1450 (Medieval Finds from Excavations in London) and Shoes and Pattens : Finds from Medieval Excavations in London (Medieval Finds from Excavations in London) by Francis Grew, go with this book. They are worth every penny. They will bore the average reader, so they are really geared for the serious student, researcher or writers. They start with excavations, and then go into the technique used to produce textiles - wool, hair, linen, silk, dyes an the looms. They show you actual pieces of material in very close up detail so you actually see the weave, in some cases they should the reconstructed "how it really appeared".This is simply the best book on the subject and a must for Historical writers of this period.

Looks great for SCA documentation
I haven't had a chance to sit down and properly read the book cover to cover. From glancing through, and the reactions of fellow Society for Creative Anachronism (Medieval) recreationists who looked through it, this would seem to be a wonderful reference for those A&S projects where documentation is required and a time machine is optimal. It gives the provenance of all the items and reconstructs them for you. (Sometimes I wonder how they got so much information out of a soggy scrap.)I weave and am looking forward to being able to reconstruct some things from the book, and the other books on accessories and shoes are on my wish list!

Many hours of pleasure
For lovers of historical clothing in this time period, this is a must have :) I've pored over this work many happy hours and have used some of the information for my own creations. The data on the finds themselves is also very interesting.

Very detailed book about textiles
This is an extremely thorough book with lots of great information if you are interested in weaving patterns, stitching patterns, etc from this time period. There are some photos but most of the items are shown by line drawings, not photos. I subtracted a star for this reason, and also because the actual clothing section is extremely limited. That section is better for learning about stitching patterns than about actual clothing patterns. I really wanted to see an actual photo of the hood but it has only a line drawing. That being said, for what the book actually covers, it's excellent. Just not quite what I was hoping for.

Brilliant.
This book is an exceptional historical and archaeological treasure trove for the historian and reenactor alike. Combining history with extant imagery and patterns with how-to guides on doing various weaves, and an elaborate and extensive bibliography, this book is one for everyone with an interest in clothing of the period. It is a must have for those of us who reenact or are interested in historical clothing, and the presentation of the text is both informative and easy to follow. I highly recommend this book.

Textiles and Clothing 1150-1450
This book contains the history of clothing in Medieval Times, spanning three centuries. The text is easy to read. A book crammed full of historical detail. Any weaver will be interested in the descriptions and illustrations of the drafts showing how different fibres were woven. There are many clear black and white photographs of fragments from garments, with their own description attached. There are some colour pages showing fragments of material found in excavations in London. There are many line drawings to show patterns and designs of cloth, and the various pieces that go to make a garment. Each chapter deals with the different texiles used, with an explanation of its origins. An excellent book for anyone, and students, wanting information on which fabrics were worn at this time. A very good purchase. Fully recommend.
