Q: Do I apply the refractory cement to all sides and then lay the fire bricks in after it is all dried up ??

No, the cement must be wet to lay the bricks or tile on, i would advise anyone to lay all of the bricks out as they will be layed before I use the cement, i like them not tight but not loose, take a pic of the layout, doing this will help avoid mistakes when you use the cement and could make a mess out of it. I don't like to use a lot of grout so i like them as close to one another as possible.
