Outstanding sci-fi horror
Event Horizon is a shining example of sci-fi horror. An experimental ship dissapears and then mysteriously reappears so a search and rescue ship is sent to investigate, along with the crew the research scientist who invented the ship's drive for the Event Horizon is present. When they reach the ship they discover an unexpected horror. For me the film works well as both a science fiction and a horror story. For the science fiction you get some wonderful scenes of the solar system and of micro gravity (in fairness the effects do look a little dated in this respect, but still do their job). It also works by not just being a horror set in space, the horror comes because it is space and the setting itself adds peril to the mission. The horror is strong by blending a mix of personal, psychological horror with good visual and more visceral scenes. It works on an individual level for the characters drawing upon their fears and the degeneration into madness, particuarly in Sam Neil's character's case. The technology of the ship also enhances this brutal aspect, the drive itself looks more like a device of medieval torture rather than esoteric technology. The pacing of the film is spot on, it doesn't take long to get going and keeps providing something new to keep you interested. The cast is small and allows you to get to know each of the cgharacters and the different aspects they feed into the story.Overall this is an excellent watch and highly recommended.

Hell in space never looked so good
anybody who has played the video game Dead Space will probably get a sense of deja vu when watching this film. And that's hardly surprising giving director Paul 'resident evil' Andersons debut was a massive influence for the game. The story follows a fate of a top secret space vessel, the Event Horizon, which mysteriously disappeared. When it suddenly re-emerges 7 years later it's up to a rescue crew led by Lawrence Fishbourne (in usual top form) to find out what happened joined by the ships creator (horror regular Sam Neill) it isn't long before the team realise all is not well. You see the Event Horizon uses black hole technology to transport anywhere instantaneously and it's quite literally been to Hell and back, and it's not long before it takes it's rage out on the newcomers. Had it not been for excellent visuals and some heavyweight actors it may have been a generic haunted house in space film, but as it is it's certainly worth a look. The picture is a mixed bag with grain where there shouldn't be but when it is good it gives credit to the excellent visuals. Sound is disappointing though. Not terrible, but not nearly enough oomph, with the speakers mumbling when they should be screeching out the horrors, removing the obligatory 'jump out of your seat' moments. Compared to it's original DVD release however it does have a few decent extras including trailers deleted scenes, storyboard, making of and commentary, just a shame it has the most boring menu screen yet seen on Blu Ray. Still overall it's a decent effort just about worth the few quid it costs

Excellent Film
Happy to see this arrive on Blu Ray as it's one of my all time favorite Sci-Fi/ Horror films, For those who've not seen it it's about an experimental spacecraft which went missing 11 years ago and has now reappeared minus it's crew, a rescue mission is sent to investigate the ships mysterious reappearance along with the ships designer with catastrophic results.Although it sounds like your usual space fodder it's more of a thriller/horror as there's no vicious alien's roaming the ship tearing people apart instead the ship turns people on themselves.I have to say to this day this is still a film which sends chills down my spine especially when watched alone at 2 in the morning with the lights off. The ships gothic atmosphere makes the film even more foreboding while Sam Neil & Laurence Fishburne along with the rest of the cast give great performances as the ill fated rescue crew.As to the Blu Ray conversion the sound is excellent when turned up it really thunders and the picture quality is excellent you can pick out the excellent detail in the ship that you would never have noticed before all in all 10/10.

Outstanding, even for SF enthusiasts
Event Horizon takes a classic SF “What If?” and twists a credible tale into a totally believable nightmare.Well almost, because most of it is sufficiently well done to hold our attention strongly enough not to question the science or the fiction, so we can simply enjoy the horror.I know the film is quite old now, but it was filmed when things were done properly before modern whizzy CGI, and the HD image quality is surprisingly good on my Blu-ray Collectors Edition.Beware, some might not like the amount of Anderson gore and violence, and remember also this is reduced in run length from the original cut – there was more gore before.
