I am a little disappointed in this pie iron. For being "cast iron" it feels really thin and smooth, to the point of it resembles pie irons made of aluminum. As the cast iron holds onto the heat and distributes it evenly, this iron will be more likely to burn what you are cooking. Be sure to lessen your cooking time. It will do a nice job with refrigerated instant biscuits, though. I also could not figure out how to unhook the hinge, as my pie iron would only open to 90 degrees. I do like the loop that holds the handles together--there are two groves in the opposing handle that allow you to tighten the closure to suit your cooking needs. I recommend this pie iron, but not too enthusiastically.

This is a welcome addition to our campfire as it is a great way to make a hot meal or treat. The non-stick surface does a good job of releasing sticky foods such as overflown pie filling and it is easy to clean even in the field. It packs down well and quickly as the rods thread in and out of the flat irons.

We love to go camping and wanted one of these to use over the fire. It seems well made and is heavy, but not too heavy to hold over the fire. It’s very straightforward and easy to put whatever you’re wanting to make inside the sandwich part. I think you could definitely do other things besides just sandwiches, but it will take some trial and error to see what will work. Glad to have this to add to our camping tools and I think it was a good value.

While this campfire pie maker is oversized, as you can see in the pictures, it will not hold two full-size pieces of bread side by side so two complete sandwiches cannot be made at once. The handles do have a lock together device to hold the pie maker shut. The description says long handles but from the edge of the pie maker to the wood handle is only 12 inches as you can see in the picture which is pretty close if you've got a hot fire to try to hold a pie maker on. I would look for a pie maker with longer handles.

Overall, this is an average quality double pie iron which is why I am only giving it an average 3 star rating. It does not seem like it is solid cast iron, but rather cast iron coated as it does not seem as sturdy as other similar pie irons. For the expensive price ($26.99 at time of review), I honestly expected better. Also rating it low in terms of being "giftable" because of the bad shape my product came in (see included photos). The outside also shows a picture of a single pie iron, not a double, so at first I thought I received the wrong product.

Im just going to make a bunch of different type of sandwich over a open fire

I got this to make grilled cheese for my kids on the grill.The header description said cast iron but it is not cast iron. I realized fine print says it is aluminum alloy.Assembly was easy but a little wabbly.Will test it out soon when weather warms up.
