How's this for a beginner?

I would say it's excellent for a beginner. I have read other reviews that say it's not good for fast action/sports, and that focus on zoom takes a few seconds and are blurry photos at times, but if you brace camera on a tripod or fence, etc, and wait for focus, you should do well with far away mountains or anything distant. I learned with a manual 35 mm camera, and this is definitely better, it takes a lot of thought out of setting up a shot while still getting good results. I definitely think you would enjoy using it.

Can we take aurora pics with this one?

Dear WilliamThere is much written about photographing the northern lights (admittedly by people a lot more knowledgeable than me). Whilst the Nikon Coolpix L330 may be used, most experts would probably not recommend it. Here's an indication of what you will probably need (not exhaustive list): - Tripod - Aperture: an f-stop of f/2.8 or faster (e.g. f/2.0) especially for night photography. You can compensate with higher ISO. The Nikon Coolpix L330 has an aperture of f/3.1-5.9 which is not ideal. - ISO: ISO setting of 400, 800 or 1600 is probably right. The L330 has an ISO of 80-1600 (auto). Generally the L330 is thin on manual functionality - Wide angle: The L330 has a lens of 4-104mm which is a fairly wide angled lens. However, this may come at some compromise to image quality- sharpness, chromatic aberration, distortion, bokeh, and several aspects of image quality. - Cable release - Chemical hand warmers - Headlamp - Flash cards that can cope with low temperature eg Sandisk "Extreme" rangeThere are a number of cameras that will be more suitable but will be more expensive. Depending on your budget, I wil be happy to make some suggestions (in and out of the Nikon range).The Northern Lights are quite spectacular and very few people get a chance to photograph them.
