Das Ruark R2 ersetzt bei mir das R3, mit dem ich nur bedingt zufrieden war, weil es im oberen Höhenbereich einen leicht aggressiven Glanz drauflegte, mit dem ich mich nicht anfreunden konnte. Allerdings glaube ich, dass das nicht unbedingt jedem auffällt, Gehöre sind verschieden. Nun also das R2, das noch nicht einmal eingespielt ist, aber die Eindrücke sind doch ziemlich eindeutig. 'Out of the box' klingt das Gerät einfach stimmig, das nach wenigen Minuten eingeleitete Firmware-Update brachte erstaunlicherweise noch ein bisschen mehr Klang im Sinne von Fülle. Das ist keine Stereoanlage - ganz klar - aber Ruark gelingt hier ein Klangbild, das auf verblüffende Weise das richtige Maß findet. Ich habe mal zu einem Händler gesagt, meine Stereoanlage klingt mir zu gut für Internetradio und das sehe ich nach wie vor so. Radio hören bedeutet für mich, dass das Gerät im Hintergrund läuft und dabei einfach ein gutes Gefühl hinterlässt, ohne aber alles zu sezieren. Das R2 klingt lebhaft und farbig, ohne irgendwie zu nerven. Natürlich wird hier mit Phasenverschiebung geschummelt, was das Zeug hält, um einen Raumklang vorzutäuschen - aber ist doch mir egal, wenn's gefällt. Sehr gute Sender wie Klassikradio über DAB+ klingen verblüffend gut und 'groß', aber selbst stark komprimierte Sender wie BBC 2 lassen sich ordentlich anhören, das war mir wichtig. Anderes Beispiel: Alte Platten der Band Renaissance klingen über meine Anlage (wie gesagt, zu gut) gnadenlos dünn und 'alt'. Mit dem Ruark (über Bluetooth, siehe unten) lassen sie sich gut anhören, gewinnen im Grunde sogar. Die wunderbare Stimme der Sängerin Annie Haslam kommt überzeugend und ziemlich realistisch rüber. Am besten kommt das Gerät mit Klassik und Jazz klar, der Versuch mit AC/DC's Thunderstruck zeigt dann doch die physikalischen Grenzen der Lautsprecher auf. Aber ehrlich, selbst das schafft das R2 mit Anstand und ohne sonderlich mumpfigen Bass wie viele Geräte dieser Art. Und wie hübsch dieses Teil ist, ich habe die dunkle 'Mokka'-Version. Nun zu den wenigen Schwächen: Die Fernbedienung, die laut Importeur neuerdings eigentlich beiliegen sollte, war bei mir nicht dabei, schade, war wohl eine ältere Charge. Dass das Gerät keinen LAN-Anschluss hat, ist aus meiner Sicht eigentlich ein Unding. Immerhin ist 5GHz-WLAN vorhanden, aber LAN sollte bei diesem extrem stolzen Preis schon drin sein. Analog kommt man nur über Miniklinke rein, habe ich bisher nicht getestet. Wieder zum Guten: Insgesamt kann ich das Gerät allen empfehlen, für die es in erster Linie um schönen Radioklang geht. Ja, ein paar Streaming-Dienste sind auch direkt integriert, allerdings nicht die besseren wie Qobuz oder Tidal. Allerdings kann man diese per Bluetooth übertragen und das funktioniert klanglich gut, meine Bluetooth-Erfahrungen sind ansonsten eigentlich eher durchmischt. So gesehen relativiert sich auch ein bisschen, dass dieses doch arg teure Gerät anders als etwa das R3 keinen CD-Player hat. Das halte ich aber für keinen großen Nachteil, denn diese Laufwerke sind sowieso nie die besten und wenn eines ausfällt, muss das ganze Gerät zum Service. Wie auch immer, was mich betrifft, war der 'Abstieg' vom R3 in Wirklichkeit ein Aufstieg, vor allem aufgrund des gelungenen Klangbilds. Am Ende muss das Schöne der Musik rüberkommen und das funktioniert hier. Den fünften Stern unterlasse ich ausschließlich wegen des zu hohen Preises.

A high price tag but the quality is stupendous, even familiar songs reveal a level of detail that had previously gone unnoticed, and the soundstaging is incredible. I love it. If you can stretch to the higher cost, buy it!

Anyone that appreciates listening to high quality music I can thoroughly recommend the Ruark R2 Mk4 radio. As an Audiophile, I needed to replace my Bose Wave radio because it doesn't have DAB+ fitted. The Bose has remarkable sound quality and therefore, I knew it would be a hard act to follow. The Ruark R2 easily lives up to the task, delivering splendid high quality 3 dimensional sound. Being able to listen to Internet radio has opened up another world to me, that previously I hadn't much interest in. I have a particular liking for classical and opera music and regularly listen to Classic FM. However, there are times I long to listen to a radio station that is dedicated to just playing opera, fortunately the wait is finally over. The Ruark R2 is beautifully styled and is a dream to use. It’s ok, for a radio. It’s not hi fi sound by any means so if you are a musician or have developed ears you will have to be quite forgiving to listen to this as your main source, the speakers are just 3 inch so you know…(to give a comparison, my guitar amplifier has a 15 inch speaker and retails way north of £2000). So I contemplated upgrading to something in the Ruark 100 series but on purchasing the ( not supplied ) remote control, for the R2, I have my doubts about this company. The remote is more a toy, resembling something that came out of a corn flakes box; how this got by ‘The Team’ is unbelievable. I did try the Revo Interconnect, at nearly twice the power and weight but most of that 30 watts seems to be directed toward the lower frequencies, so I sent it back. To be fair the quality of Internet radio isn’t great and even when streaming Tidal ( in compressed form for this radio) the recordings themselves vary in quality… I bought 3 radios, the third the Roberts iStream3L surprisingly as pleasant to listen to as these others. At low volumes each one can work, but if you are seeking genuine Hi-Fi music be prepared to pay much much more. It will necessitate separates and you will require a hi quality source, (not even sure about Tidal), maybe vinyl. In many ways it seems to me if you are listening to Internet radio or streaming via Bluetooth and have good ears, you will be better off with a less revealing, less powerful system, like this Ruark R2 MK4. The Ruark 610 might fit the bill if space is limited but the sellers (and reviewers) exaggerated claims make me nervous and of course it’s much more expensive. Right now I’m pretty happy with the MK2 playing light classical music at low volumes (15-17). ( BBC 3 UNWIND ). It’s located in a 12 inch deep double window alcove which at first made the base boomy, even when sitting on an expensive vibration absorbing pad. What eventually did work though was rotating the radio at an angle to the rear windows, about 5 degrees in the horizontal plain, which to my ears gave a much more even bass response than when moving just front to back
