Wonderful treatment of snotty nose and sinuses
I used to scuba dive a lot and remember how contact with sea water cleared my "tubes"!For many years I have been regularly using a fluticasone nasal spray, such as Flixonase. This is prescribed by my doctor who diagnosed non-specific rhinitis (in other words: nasal allergy to lots of things). This stuff has a number of side effects that I hadn't realised until recently, when I developed a really bad nose bleed that I only managed to stop by shoving cotton wool soaked in Sinex up my nostril. (This is a recommended treatment for severe nose bleeds, as Sinex contains oxymetazoline which is the drug ENT surgeons use to stop nasal bleeding during surgery.)Anyway, to cut a long story short, I decided that I was getting side effects from the prolonged use of the nasal spray, I have stopped using it and now do twice daily nasal washes with Physiomer and my nose and sinuses are as clear as a bell. A recent head cold I had cleared up very quickly with little nasal congestion. We don't seem to use saline nasal wash much in the UK, although I think that our continental cousins are more likely to use it.A final point, there are sea water nasal washes available in pharmacies and some supermarkets in the UK. The most commonly available are Sterimar and Vicks. However, these are aerosol products and, in my view, best avoided. Physiomer is a pump action product that delivers sterile sea water in a very controllable way and avoids some of the ecological damage of aerosols. There are cheaper ways to spray saline into the nose, using reusable squeezy bottles and making up your own saline. But I feel Physiomer is far more convenient, which means it can be used regularly twice a day with no faddle and you can be confident that the risk of reinfecting oneself is minimised.
