Entertaining and Funny
Just to correct a common misconception: THIS FILM WAS NOT A CINEMATIC FLOP! It topped the box office in most european countries including France, even beating competition from Harry Potter in Greece.Yes this movie was panned by a lot of critics, but expectations were so incredibly high that it's no surprise it didn't manage to meet them. Firstly it was following the hugely entertaining, intelligent and successful 'Mission Cleopatra'. Secondly it was the most expensive French pic ever (with a reported budget of $115 million).Ignoring all that and just taking the film on its own merits, I found it thoroughly entertaining and funny (at least when watched in French). It was certainly far better than the most recent animated attempt 'Asterix et les Vikings'.Ok it doesn't deserve five stars (I gave it that to balance the silly one-star review below), but I would be comfortable giving it four. I'm glad I purchased it and I will watch it again.

A great film with many aspects!
We watched this film after the disappointing "Asterix takes against Ceasar" from 1999, which we thought was horrendous and rather crap, so we didn't expect much. This film is so entertaining and really super, comes after Asterix and Cleopatre and some of the characters come back from that film at the end, which is super. The actors are really good, the new Asterix instead of Clavier is very fitted to the role, and Depardieu is very good as Obelix.I really liked the fact that it links cleverly other films or scenes (Cyrano and Star Wars and other bits from all over the place) and I guess famous sports men and famous people come through the film, but as we don't watch the news we don't know who they are, though suspected Eric Cantona to hang about at the end (could be wrong about that, don't quote me) .A really superb film, really appreciated, as good as CLeopatre was, which we also recommend!

Funny film
The version which we purchased has English dialogue and English subtitles which differ from each other. From the site info, we had expected that it would be in French with English subtitles, which we could turn on or off as desired. However, it was funny to compare what was being said with how the subtitles read. Could not be bothered to return it, but watched it. Would probably have given it 5 stars if it had been the version I expected. Therefore, need to check languages indicated on site are correct.

Should Have Been Better
Over rated...... Asterix is virtually a non player ( not the same actor seen in the earlier films ) and Brutus was annoying most of the time, too much French cackling suitable for mostly kids, not enough substance compared to the earlier Astrix films, hasits moments but too few ........ could have been better and funnier and less tiresomely silly loosing the plot much by the end withmodern pop / sport mixed up with it which didn't really fit !

Good fun but not the same
The problem with Asterix films, whether animated or with real people, is that there is no continuity between them, their voices change each time (different actors, of course). Also, of course, the film versions are never faithful to the original story. Nevertheless, this film captures the spirit of the original story, but its humour is more directed to the younger audience (whilst the books have a more universal appeal).

French language film for Olympics
French language films for young people difficult to find locally. Delivery speedy as promised. Film enjoyed by my students especially as it linked in to an Olympic project last summer.

Is there a bad Asterix?
This had me laughing (rarely these days from movies) and was just so enjoyable. Hope Gerard does some funny shows from Russia. The humor in the Asterix series is great, and we first saw this one on a Cathay Pacific 12 hr flight from Hong Kong to Zurich. Just had to buy my own copy and well worth it for continuous enjoyment.
