In this important theoretical treatist, Jean Lave, anthropologist, and Etienne Wenger, computer scientist, push forward the notion of situated learning - that learning is fundamentally a social process. The authors maintain that learning viewed as situated activity has as its central defining characteristic a process they call legitimate peripheral participation (LPP). Learners participate in communities of practitioners, moving toward full participation in the sociocultural practices of a community. LPP provides a way to speak about crucial relations between newcomers and old-timers and about their activities, identities, artefacts, knowledge and practice. The communities discussed in the book are midwives, tailors, quartermasters, butchers, and recovering alcoholics, however, the process by which participants in those communities learn can be generalised to other social groups. Review: Very good book - Really enjoyed this, thoughtful, but accessible and it helped me pass my MA module. So, I am a happy bunny all round. Review: Excellent book - Great value. Quick delivery too.

useful for MA dissertation
Relatively easy to read and informative for MA dissertation examining communities of practice. Good starting point which then links to Wenger's later texts.

Great discussion about communities of practice and learning trajectories
I bought this book to support my understanding of communities of practice for my PhD. Great explanation of theories and the real life examples that support those theories.

Inspiring, but hard to read
Loved this. Inspired me to keep reading on about this situated learning stuff, and just finished "Communities of Practice" by Wenger. This book by Lave and Wenger is really hard to read though, and it makes the book a challenging read. Really hits home with examples, though.
