Start'em Early!
I bought this for my rising 3rd grader so he could get the understanding of the basics early.Amazing things you can do with this book, a whiteboard and an 8 year old! Obviously I tweek the content so it's not overwhelming but no complaints. If you want to play XBOX - than tell me what the answer is for ((3*(17+8) - 60)/5)*(9*0).He's getting it and I'm happy I spent the money!

Good to guide a conversation, not that easy to assign problems from
I WANT to love this product. It brings the real world of curious minds from the authors' experience with teaching math to bright students and posing interesting questions to them. HOWEVER. It is kind of hard to use. I tried handing it to my 6th grader and that did not work. Admittedly he is used to Singapore math with its clear, engaging workbooks. This book is meant for a teacher to walk thru, and when I sat with him and explained things it did work pretty well. The down side was that it was hard to tell when they moved to a new concept without reading every word. The typography didn't help me prioritize one little tiny block over another, and I sometimes skimmed right past a foundational building block. On the BRIGHT SIDE, I was able to teach from it and get across an engaging conversation about math. It is just that it was hard to do anything but follow along with the set lesson because it was not very skimmable. Particularly because the problems are scattered through the text and therefore hard to assign. It might all make more sense if I knew more about Math Counts coaching sessions. I think I was expecting a text more similar to Saxon math. This would need a teacher to type out problems so the student can find them. Otherwise the student will be playing hide and seek. Young students get overwhelmed by logistics like that. I have not yet needed access to the solutions manual, so I cannot comment on that.

no live support
8/21/2020My son wanted to take an introduction to programming course at the AoPS (Art of Problem Solving) school. We have many years of remote learning under our belt with several schools, my son is a straight A student, self-motivated, self-directed, and HE wanted to take this course. We signed up for the course only to find the course had no live support available, ever. My son posted numerous questions over several weeks to the instructor and never received a single response or even acknowledge of his questions. When I contacted student services at AoPS, they told us we should reach out for support by posting a request for support on his class Message Board. He posted 4 requests for help over 2 weeks and never received a single response. I personally watched the "teaching" provided by the teacher online, and as best I can tell the teacher has a pre-prepared curriculum that he/she is cutting and pasting into an online blog and expect the students to follow at beyond lighting speed. I am a techy myself, and a former programmer. I could not make any sense of what the "instructor" was posting as education, and there was ZERO response from the instructor to any question posted by anyone during the class. As a former programmer if I didnt know better I would say there was no instructor at all, but rather a pre-programmed bot that was simply spewing out information.
