A Worthwhile Journey
I've been a Western fan since a child in the 1950s. I saw extracts of this film on YouTube and it lookedworth buying on DVD. I was not disappointed with a bargain issue available on Blu-ray. The genre has afine addition with this offering from writer/director Scott Cooper. It tells of an unwilling Union Armycaptain's last act of service transferring a terminally ill old captive Indian war chief and his immediate family back to his ancestral homeland. Splendidly photographed against huge New Mexico and Colorado landscapes that continually offer various dangers along the way, it is also a story of a man brutalisedby what he has seen and done in his own service and which he still faces, both in memory and in livethreat, along the way. Christian Bale is admirable in this sparely written tale, his experiences and theircost etched on his face as he seeks to complete his mission and keep his small party - which includesthe widow of a murdered rancher whose children were also killed in an Indian raid and discoveredin the burnt out ruins of their home along the way. Since this event opens the story, there is no spoiler here. I'm glad Mr Cooper was successful in getting his story on the screen. It makes a number ofrelevant points about the human condition still known today, combined with moments of brutalaction that remind us of the way two cultures collided in a vast land already riven by tribal wars, withboth the new settlers and the indigenous peoples suffering and administering heartless cruelty in thecourse of the struggles that saw the birth of a great nation, something that the film acknowledgesas a sad fact that still resonates in American life. A dark but very worthwhile journey, enhanced byan ideal cast and quality production values.. Highly recommended.

A great story of a woman overcoming personal tragedy!
Fast acting start to this movie that was brutal in the extreme. Almost an entire young family except the wife/mother (Rosamund Pike) wife killed by a renegade pack of Comanche warriors, a notorious tribe whose willingness to go to the depths of depravity knew no bounds. The plot was brilliant. A terminally ill warrior (Wes Studi) being taken home to where his tribe once occupied escorted by an Army Captain (Christian Bale), who had bad memories of this dying chief and hated him with a passion. The long journey is one of survival for the groupand a growing romance for the widowed mother and the Captain. Very moving story of how love can survive in a brutal world. A must see!
