Unshakeable: My Motorcycle Racing Story

I don’t remember the last time I finished a book in a week, but this one had me captivated from the start. Even the forewords were great, especially from Shane’s wife Petra.This is a book worth reading even if you don’t care about motorcycles. Its about a kid growing up in a poor working class public housing environment in the UK, who sets himself a goal at a young age to become a motorcycle racer and pursues it with wit, street smarts and laser sharp focus. Most of the time, anyway. However, this book is far from self congratulatory, but rather brutally honest and self reflective, not omitting mistakes and corners cut along the way. All of this is delivered in excellent writing and that special self deprecating British humor throughout. Grab a copy and enjoy the journey from a kid jumping and crashing his cheap BMX bicycle off dirt piles in his neighborhood to becoming one of the very best racers of his generation.

I'm an long time motorcycle racing fan and have been a fan of Shane's ever since he won his first BSB title. He's always been approachable but I've read a few bike racer autobiographies and expected more of the same; 2-300 pages of, "Look how great I am".I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised. None of the books I've read have engaged me like "Unshakeable".Very well written, the conversational style reads like you're in the room with Shane and he's telling you the story himself. I was hooked from the first chapter which, unlike any other book of this sort, is written by his wife Petra, who bookends it, providing even more depth and gives us an insight into (as she puts it) Shane the husband and father versus Shakey the racer.Shakey has long been a favourite with the fans and this book shows why. An honest, engaging and thoroughly enjoyable read. Highly recommended.
