2014 three CD set. MASTERPIECE is undoubtedly the most prestigious DJ led series on the Ministry of Sound label. The series allows it's curator to build a selection of tracks that represent their inspirations both before and during their musical careers. As an artist, actor and musician, Goldie's talents are vast and his music career undisputed. Broken down into three discs titled the Alpha, Journeyman and Headzville, Goldie takes US on a journey from early inspirations such as Junior Murvin, Terry Callier, Serious Intention and Soul II Soul through to Drum 'n' Bass classics from the likes of Zero B, Nookie, Egyptian Empire and Roni Size. Disc Three is a showcase of some of the creme de la creme of producers signed to Goldie's own label Metalheadz, including dBridge, Commix, Jubei and more.

The Best in The Series
A great triple disc album to have in your collection. Spread over 3 very different CD's, one is some old 80's classics like "back to Life", with very much a soulful vibe throughout. Not the best production on this first CD and some of the tracks do tend to drag a little, but overall a nice hour mix with a dozen decent tracks that flow reasonably well. CD 2 is 90's Jungle era, moving into 00's, starting off quite old school but growing and progressing into a nice blended mix and rhythm gearing you up nicely for the pick of the 3, CD 3. Which is Goldie, now in 2014, metalheadz and all, at his prime and just brilliant. The perfect opening track is Inner Disbelief - dBridge before he drops in Be True - Commix is just brilliant and sets the tone for the next 70 minutes for a masterpiece 22 track lesson in some of the best DnB on the market, mixed by a DnB legend, music pioneer, artist, DJ and producer. Listen and Enjoy.

Goldie's "Masterpiece" in my opinion is the best in this series since François Kevorkian gave us the first edition Masterpiece Created By Francois K 6 years ago. Since then there have been some pretty patchy instalments, not the least of which was Carl Craig's in 2013 ( Masterpiece Carl Craig - Ministry of Sound ). That said, I haven't heard the Weatherall one ( Masterpiece - Andrew Weatherall ) so don't know if that was any good. That aside, Clifford Price's selection is something of a return to form for Ministry of Sound's Masterpiece releases and hopefully we will see many more of these to come.As has been the case with recent Masterpiece editions, the first CD (entitled "The Alpha") is reserved for the artist's influences and contains selection that are not necessarily "dance" music (or not at all, in some cases). Now (and as one who's not a fan of mix LPs as a rule), I'm always a bit doubtful of the need to mix this sort of music, i.e. where there's no particular style, and it takes a real master to pull something like that off - a Jeff Mills or a Frankie Knuckles (RIP) for example. So how does Goldie fare? Well it's not absolutely perfect but as an end-to-end listen it definitely has something, even if Radiohead's "Just" at the end is a tad jarring. Overall it's certainly worth hearing for the lounged-up "Inner City Life" - a version which just goes to show what a classic song that one was.CD2 ("Journeyman") has an interesting style: Roni Size, A Guy Called Gerald, Wax Doctor and Goldie himself all feature but it's not what I would call an all out drum 'n' bass assault - the disc has a happy, house-y feel to it, with most of the tracks dating from the early-to-mid 1990s. This might well be the style of music they used to call "jungle" (a style I myself missed out on at the time) - before it morphed into drum 'n' bass. In any case it's something of a toe-tapping and not too abrasive listen. The third disc is called "Headzville" and consists of recent (late 2000s - present day) releases from Goldie's Metalheadz label. Now this one IS more of a full-on d'n'b assault. Don't be fooled by the melodic and poppy openers as we're taken mid-disc into heavier territory e.g. "Headz Roll" by Loxy & Ink, before the mix returns to melody and moodier vocal numbers nearer the end (witness the wonderful "Make It Clear" by Ivy Lab & Hydro by way of example). Fittingly, the album comes to a close with three spacier tracks from Goldie's "Rufige Cru" alias going to show that this man has never lost his touch. What is interesting about this release though is that despite this heaviness the music is never depressing - clearly I've been listening to too much dubstep of late: the Metalheadz style is markedly different from, say, the Hyperdub style. The packaging is the same as the other CDs in the series with the artist's portrait (the masterpiece?) on the front cover and a booklet - sleevenotes by Kraftwerk biographer Tim Barr as well as a disc-by-disc commentary by Clifford himself.I think the mark of any good compilation is if it contains signposts to artists you haven't yet heard or indeed ones you might want to re-discover (time to check out Smokey Robinson!) and this one certainly does that for me, as one who classes himself as a long-time admirer, rather than an avid fan of, Goldie.Nice one Mr Price - class. My own suggestion for the next Masterpiece? Jeff Mills.
