The Encyclopedia of Pastel Techniques: A unique visual directory of pastel painting techniques, with guidance on how to use them

As a beginner this book really improved my pastel techniques. It has helpful demonstrations and tips, and brilliant examples of so many various artists works, it also shows you how to mix pastels with other media such as watercolour and gouache.I also found it a source of inspiration for some of my compositions. It has given me a lot of joy.My boyfriend bought it me as a valentines gift after I had added it as a favourite and I can't fault it. Brownie points all around. XD

Had all you sang to start off with some real great tips

A nice, basic book describing a variety of techniques using pastel. Not too in-depth and lacking practical demonstrations a bit, but covers a good number of techniques. I was a bit disappointed that panpastels were mentioned as a type of pastel in the intro, but not covered at all in the techniques. The book did offer inspiration in the number of pictures it included and was interesting to read, but more demos would have been nice. In summary, a good, solid book, but won’t be a favourite in my bookshelf.

Just what I needed

This is a great little book which is part of a series of books on different art techniques. I first borrowed it from the library and found it so useful, I decided to buy it. These books tell you all you need to know on a subject with great illustrations and projects to have a go at - good value for money, and a book you can dip into again and again.

As a beginner this books covers all I need to know from beginning to paint with pastels and onwards. Thee is so much to learn. I can see that even the experienced pastel painter will find this book helpful as it covers so many techniques one can use. Have already started my first picture and I am well on the way to finishing a very lovely flower. I think this is a good subject to start with.

A really interesting book which provides you with visual of different pastel techniques, but if you are looking for a tutorial this is not the book for you.

This book was very informative, but I only use pastel pencils, so most of it was about soft pastels,but it was very interesting reading

This is a very good book that has a-lot of information about pastels that I haven’t seen in my other books, including the use of oil pastels as well as soft pastels. I recommend this book!

As a newcomer to the art of pastel painting I found this Encyclopedia to be very helpful. It covers a variety of techniques which are explained and illustrated well. I'm very glad I bought this book.
