Kind of small for an 8, kind of pricy for what it is
I have a massive head, and as a result I had to buy a Tilley rather than one of the myriad other boonie hats out there that don't come in size 8+. Tilley makes an 8+, but the jump in size from 8 to 8+ is kind of ridiculous. I decided to go with the smaller 8 and put up with the red stripe on my forehead when I took it off rather than the 8+ and have the hat balancing on the crown of my head, but frankly neither is a "perfect" option. What I really wanted was a simple straw cowboy hat, but good luck finding one in my size. The Tilley airflow works very well as a sun hat out in the yard. Where I live it gets up to triple-digits in the summertime, and the venting does a really nice job of keeping your head cool while the brim and crown keep your face/neck/bald head protected from the sun. I think the design offers more protection than some of the other hats you see with the entire crown made of mesh, while still providing a lot of ventilation. It's a fairly unattractive hat, so I won't be wearing it out of the house. The brim is kind of floppy, and doesn't hold a form, but it's also thick and spongy so it looks a little weird. Not a big deal while mowing the grass or doing other yardwork, but also not something I'll be wearing to a restaurant (if those are ever even a thing again with COVID). If it didn't cost me $90 I'd probably go 4 stars for the quality and design, but the cost and the fact that it just doesn't fit right (mostly because of the weird jump in sizes) knocks it down a notch for me.
