Do i want to switch it on all the time?

It depends on the size of aquarium and size, number of fishes. In case of Small tank, large fishes, large number of small fishes you need to run it for longer hours. But after running for 4-5 hours you can switch it off for 1-2 hours. After feeding do run it as it takes away excess food, debris and food color from water.
