In the beginning there was the soap bar.......
Vanish Oxi Action Powder 1 KgWhen I worked in the consumer products industry on detergents back in the late 1970's, washing powders were made by spray drying and consisted of detergents, optical whiteners and other agents. The stain removing additives were limited by the temperatures of the production process and were typically used in washing machines at 60-100C. All cleaning comes from chemical activity ( roll up of fats and trapping in detergent structures- micelles) , temperature ( softening of fats) and mechanical action ( shaking of solids and rolled up fats) . Optical brighteners hid yellowing by fluorescing blue in light ( UV) . There were oxygen bleaches which were activated by the heat of the wash . As wash temperatures decreased , various new oxygen bleaches were tried for stains but either were unstable in manufacture or storage or overactive in use .The customer only wanted a single product to use. Stain removal was limited to using pastes of original powders , special solvents , or ( in the 1980's) cold water soap bar ( Vanish).Fast forward 35 years - washing powders have been replaced by tablets and liquids and operating temperatures are down to 30-40C .Volumes of washing water have been drastically reduced in an ecological drive. Hard water softening polyphosphates have been banned ( or severely limited.)Stain removal and detergency had become more fraught. Detergents were re designed to work at low temperatures but could not manage all severe stains..Enter a prespotter / additive as powder/ granules - , a preblend of detergents and a concentrated safe(r) oxidizing bleach ( a stabilised form of hydrogen peroxide) which reacts directly in cold water to give active oxygen and can operate as low as 30C and can be selectively applied giving concentrated action or can be added to the main wash. Enzymes and zeolite ( non phosphate calcium ion complexing agents) are also cited in the ingredients .The original problems of stability on storage are overcome..The iridescent pink tub which also comes with its own pink dosing scoop calibrated , shaped , which doubles as a non abrasive rubbing unit , to work the material into the fabric as a paste in pre spotter mode prior to washing.Does it work? YES but , like with all chemicals , care is needed and there is a list of items where the material is NOT to be used . There are three main usages - wash , soak , pretreat - for which excellent details are given on the container.Unlike chlorine bleaches ( which attack all stains and colourings on fabrics) the latest oxidative bleaches are more selective but may still damage sensitive fabrics if used carelessly. To avoid possible irritation avoid skin contact (Wear gloves)In a clever marketing ploy Benckieser invites customers to report their experiences and new uses for the product. These are worth checking out on their website.www.vanish.co.uk .Note added 11/6/2014There have been several further developments of the VANISH powder additive range including a "super white" and a gold versionBased on independent testing ( "Er indoors" the wife) use the "Super white" for whites and stick with the pink for delicates and coloureds - still recommended and buying from Amazon - 60% cheaper than Supermarkets in our experienceRecommended!NOTE added 11/9/2014 - still well pleased with both the Pink and the White variants . All products were tested in a Miele washing machine - on lower wash temperatures ( 30-50C). We find the Miele is very good anyway but the vanish powders gives that extra Oomph for the really stubborn stains
